used bike last week end came home went to use next day no electric's tied all the obvious new alarm fob battery new battery to bike still no joy. with the new battery get load of clicking sound dash board read out push starter engine does not turn over, display goes blank tried shorting starter motor still no joy could it be the starter motor us ! giving a short, if so how do you remove the dam thing or any other ideas that could be causing the problem
To remove starter motor you will need to remove the genny/flywheel cover to access one of the bolts that secure it.
when you shorted the starter did you bypass the relay with a jump lead straight onto the terminal on the starting motor, just a thought before you go dropping the oil and coolant out your bike to remove the left hand alternator casing. reason I ask is I had the same problem with mine a couple years ago,I tried bridging the 2 terminals on the relay first and had no joy, then with a jump lead I bypassed the relay straight onto the starting motor and the bike turned over telling me that it was the relay that was gone, thank god cause i had just fitted new brushes to the starter days before.
First I wondering about the state of your battery or the starter lead connectors as you described a clicking sound but if you now say that starter is turning freely then maybe the sprag clutch is loose or damaged.
l have found shortening the spring only works for a couple of months in every day usage go to your local ktm dealer for a new one cheaper than ducati Steve B
Ducati monopoly pricing again eh Steve? - found the same with clutch plates. Can't believe that somewhere out there interchangeable ones don't exist.

Deffo the sprag clutch i would say if you can hear the starter whirling,I just done mine a couple years back its not that bad a job to do
what do you have to take apart to get at sparg clutch or is there a repair manual that covers the str 916
I think the basics of the ST4 are the same as my 996s if it is then the casing you need to remove is this one
to remove this cover you will need to make a tool to pull it off or buy one off ebay/net, this is the 1 I made and fitted to cover in the end of the crankshaft is a m8 bolt when you tighten the little nuts this will push the steel bar against the head of the bolt pulling the cover away from the crankcase,Before doing this you will need to drain the oil and coolant remove all the cover bolts making note of which goes where and remove the slave cylinder & gear linkage .
once you have the rotor off the sprag clutch is housed in the back of it behind a large gearing which if i remember correctly comes off with the rotor the sprag clutch is within a housing that looks like this View attachment 6253 you might need to buy a new 1 of these to go with the new sprag take your old 1 along to your local ducati dealer they will tell you if you do,remember the sprag clutch can only go in 1 way ther is an arrow on it telling you which way it must go in cause it only bites 1 way and freewheels the other. any query's just ask
Drain your coolant first , you should be able to leave the oil in the engine if you tip the bike to the right by leaning the relevent handlebar end against the wall, with a ziptie round the front brake? Ummmm pull your alt.cover off - will either tap off or be a pig, needing a puller? That will leave you with this: You now need to get the flywheel nut undone... best get yourself an impact wrench, I got one of these - best £30 I ever spent! 1/2" 12V Impact Wrench Kit 350Nm RAC 038/2364 12 VOLT 5013433012101 | eBay Nut and washer off, alternator off (note which way round it fits, mark the outside face) an pull the flywheel off. Can't remember if you need to remove the pickups? If you do then make a note of the advance marks: Flywheel: The 9** one is on the left? RED THREADLOCK THE FLYWHEEL NUT WHEN YOU PUT IT BACK ON AND TORQUE IT UP - or you will have "issues" later...
