I think you need to investigate further as something doesn't sound right. Easiest job is to take the wheel of and check how it is located. Before you do that undo the other central sprocket carrier nut so that you can move the hub forward and remove the sprocket carrier, that will allow you to check the cush drive rubbers. I would say they are likely to provide the most problems, after that you will need to check out the hub more carefully. It's not a difficult job but getting the rear wheel and large sprocket carrier nut off can prove difficult if you don't have a long breaker bar or an impact driver. If you remove the cush drive nuts you should replace them with new ones as the heads are crimped in order to lock onto the cush drive thread. They are meant to be used only once and they are cheap to replace.
Booked in in with a local garage. I suspect all that is wrong is that the sprocket is not tight to the hub. If you hold the edge of it you can move it in and out my a millimetre or so. I can also rotate the nut holding it on, by a couple of degrees by hand!
:Wideyed: No you definitely shouldn't - Sounds like the clip was the only thing stopping this unscrewing itself ! (Assuming there is a clip in place?) Nut needs torquing to 137Nm
Excuse the pun but I'm starting to think that this might be a wind up? You've managed to find the answer yourself and one of the nuts is hand tight... A/ this is a wind up and you've managed to 'pull the wool' over a few members, well done B/If you are serious then you need to get the bike booked in somewhere you trust for a full nut and bolt tighten check as it sounds as though it could be dangerous and particularly if you can't tell that it is.
The clip was in place. I'm thinking that when he rear sproket was changed perhaps it wasn't tightened to the correct torque. I'll torque it up and see how it looks.
So torqued it up, if you imagine the torque wrench starting at 2 o'clock, it clicked at 4 o'clock. No play at all now in anything and the wheel rotates with the cog. No catch up. Interestingly the torque settings I've seen for this range from 137 to 156Nm?
