1200 Ducati Battery Charger?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by ChrisBirb, Jan 15, 2015.

  1. Hi folks!!
Put the Multi away for winter and ordered an official battery charger from Ducati. Been OK on charge for the last few weeks but noticed something different the other day.
The red power LED is on and the green maintenance LED is pulsing on and off. Up until I noticed that the green LED was solid in maintenance mode. Checked the paperwork that came with the charger and there's no mention of the green LED pulsing at all. Unplugged it for the moment till I find out what's going on.
Any other forum members had this with their charger? I'll be getting in touch with Ducati about it but thought I would ask on here first.
    Thanks for any info/help!!

    Chris.

  2. I think the sequence is Red when charging, flashing Green when over 80% and then steady Green once charge/maintenance mode reached.

  3. It is possible that voltage had dropped in battery and it was at that time you were there and pulsing light was the trickle charge topping up the battery.

  4. I have the Ducati charger that plugs into the DDA port on my 899 and have experienced the same thing. After a few days The green LED fades to the point it can't really been seen but pulses occasionally, my local dealer swapped the charger but the new one still does the same. Even when connected directly to the battery on my KTM the charger acts the same. I've recently been in touch with the dealer and Ducati in Italy who both say it's a characteristic of the charger, little odd that the manual doesn't reflect this though.

  5. Just goes to show everything Ducati has its odd quirks

  6. so is it worth getting ducati battery charger where do you plug it in?

  7. I don't know how much the Ducati charger is but I use an Oxford Oximiser (under £20) which I've used on my last 3 bikes over the past 8 years and it's been faultless. I just connected the terminal ends direct to my battery with the connector fed to the tray under the back seat. When I want to head off I just undo the connector, lock the rear seat and go.

Suppose I could stick a Ducati sticker on it but then it would probably develop 'character' and stop working properly...;)

  8. The ducati charger comes with a plug that connect directly to the DDA connection of the newer bikes, on the 899 this is under the rear seat and saves the trouble of trying to connect directly to the battery. Despite the odd green led the charger does what it needs to. I've noticed that optimate now list a ducati connection p/n SAE-047. If I'd have seen this before I probably wouldnt have bothered with the genuine ducati charger.

  9. Just had a ducati charger as part of the deal with the bike , so just sold my optimise , bugger.

  10. Or even optimate

  11. Does your green led go dim or pulse sometimes? Funny as mines been on solid for a few weeks now

  12. Glad I found this thread... I've just bought a 1199 a few days ago and have got it connected to the Ducati charger via the under seat connector. After about 24 hours on charge it's showing 11.9v with engine off but drops to 11.7 within about 30 seconds.

My question is..... Should I be hearing the fuel pump buzzing/whiring noise continuously and my lights are always on. Is this normal???

    Thanks J

  13. hope this helps....when I bought my SF this year the dealer sold me a Ducati optimate charger. He told me it was plug n play just plugin into a lead under seat. I got the same symptoms as described in the OPs question above...but when I did that it kept messing up the LCD display and did not seem to charge bike, Eventually I took bike back to dealer and they admitted they gave me wrong advice and I was plugging the charger in to the diagnostic lead....so we fitted a lead straight of battery as per norm now no prob

  14. Ah! Thanks Diver. I have an Optimate connector on the left side fairing so I'm guessing the previous owner went straight to the battery via the Optimate eyelets directly onto the battery. Mmmmh, I'm tempted to send back the Ducati charger and buy an Optimate.

  15. i just kept the Ducati one and used the alternative set of leads supplied.....the bit that pissed me off was the Ducati one was 30 quid more than a normal optimate

  16. When I had a chat with my dealership service manager about using an old Optimate 3 he advised that I could simply connect it direct to the battery. He also said that the new 'Ducati' one is designed to plug into the bike's diagnostic socket.

  17. thats what they told me......but it was not so, just my experience

  18. I have the Ducati charger. I bought it when I bought the bike 3 months ago. It plugs into the diagnostic plug on the bike. My charger has 3 led's on it. Power, Charge and Maintenance. I noticed that it can be on for days and the power and charge led's are on but the Maintenance led never lights. I noticed tonight that the charge led was yellow and i'm pretty sure it's normally green. Anyway if I turn it off then on again the power led and Maintenance led now light up. Weird. I'm gonna monitor it over the next week or so and see what happens.
