1200 DVT Fuel Indicator Not Working Properly

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by arihess, Aug 5, 2015.

  1. Had new fuel sender replaced under warranty along with all the other faulty bits, still not working properly, might have to move to coventry

  2. In what way is it not working "properly" ?

  3. fuel warning light on and showing empty, then only took 13 quid to fill it up.. then stayed showing empty and fuel light stayed on, light went off after 20 miles or so, but fuel bars showing only half a tank, at least my trip meters are working now so i can have some idea how far i can go.

  4. Sounds like same old problem. :(
Do you know if they fitted a modified part or just a replacement of the same?

  5. Dont know, i suspect its the same ,my new display screen looks the same as the original, put a plastic bag over it when fueling, frightened to touch it till my screen saver comes .

  6. It ought to work upside down if they study it and modify it. I've tapped around the base of my tank and shaken the bike about and it doesn't free itself up. I'm wondering if there's something gooey in cheap supermarket and E10 fuel that I've used on mine?

  7. good tip. I always flip my visor down when fueling......after seeing Euan McGregor get petrol in his eyes on the Long Way Round

  8. I don't think it's your fuel - if the fuel was the cause of the problem there's a lot of shite being pumped into quite a few bikes, right across the globe.

  9. Use got the same problem, 2 bars from empty, filled up and still showed 2 bars. As the ride progressed the display increased to Half full and stayed there. Bugger!! back to the dealers and am sure (riders ) will say bring it in October, earliest slot. They should have fixed times for warrenty work instead of months ahead

  10. I am not convinced that simply installing the sender unit from the bottom of the tank rather than the top of the tank, as mentioned by @Pete1950 , is without effect. When the probe goes in from the top of the tank the "float" is designed to drop under gravity and rise under buoyancy, when it is inverted the forces are different. A ship floats upside down differently from when it is the right way up. Could this lead to the float jamming somehow ? But if it was that simple why would an electronic fault be registered ?

Hopefully my newly installed sender unit will work for a long time. It is slow to drop from the high level though.

  11. I can understand it behaving differently inverted, but I would expect vibration and movement to shake it loose if it gets stuck at all. The problem appears to be intermittent jamming followed by permanent jamming in the low position. It's stiction I think. It can't be hard to study and redesign for a cure.

  12. I had my fuel sender replaced at 2,000 miles and it's been working fine for the last 2,500 miles. The linearity is much better than the original sender, for example today the fuel gauge showed a single bar flashing red and I rode with the range showing 0 for about 4 miles. When I filled up it took 19.72 liters. I might not cut it so fine in future :)

  13. I now have 1000 miles on my DVT and the fuel sender problem reared it's ugly head yesterday. 15 miles to 0 and filled up to the top of the tank. Gauge showed 50 miles range. Had gone up to 65 miles by the time I got home 5 miles later. Turned off the ignition, gave the bike a good old shake about ( a habit from my 2 stroke motocross days with sticky carb floats gummed up by old 2 stroke oil mix), turned the ignition back on and hey presto, full tank shown.

One to monitor I think. If this has been happening for this long, and after the very informative exploded view by OP then this may not be something that can be permanently fixed?

  14. Mine's starting to play up at 4k. Dealer has ordered a new one for me.

  15. Well, shortly after my previous post, my fuel sender went up the shoot properly, sticking at 4 miles and the gauge on red and flashing. It is in for replacement on Monday. Funny thing was the salesman at my local dealer told me today that they have changed the same part on virtually every Mutley DVT they have sold this year! He was surprised that there hadn't been a recall issued by Ducati UK.

Maybe a recall should be on the cards, but the importers don't seem keen on that sort of thing, eh?

  16. Surely before they do a recall they have to have a solution to the problem that works, not just repeatedly changing out senders with a fundamental design flaw.

  17. Very true, you would hope that the combined engineering brains of Ducati could come up with a fix. Not like fuel senders are new technology....

  18. 700 miles on my Multistrada Enduro 17 MY and fuel gauge glowing and 35 mile range no matter how much fuel I have. Phoned dealer and they said they have to send me some instructions to attempt to calibrate it myself before they can order any parts. Any one else had this ? Looking at this forum it's been an ongoing problem for years WTF. ALSO been told that when my engine is hot expect the bike to roll backwards when using the automatic hand brake. WTF2. If my car did this there would be world war 3. Any advise gladly accepted.
