996 Rear Tyre Width - Bag Of Worms ?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by DucatiGary, Sep 3, 2015.

  1. im reading conflicting advice on different forums about what width rear tyre I should be using on my 996.

some are saying go for 180 as you get better turn in but im looking to keep it standard as I rebuild it and its got a 190 on now, and looks like they came from ducati with the 190's (via the unreliable source of info, wikipedia)

    now others (in australia) are saying theirs came standard with a 180 . . . . . . . . .

can anyone help me out if UK bikes came with 190's on the rear ?

    thanks

  5. 180 was standard on 748's and 190 on the bigger bikes including the 998. Personally I find the 180 better in performance terms but if you want total originality then you will need to go for a 190.

  6. Is it a 6 inch rim on the 996 or a 5.5? I would stick with 180 on a 5.5 but 190 on a 6 inch personally.

  9. 190 on both my 996's. 748/998 come with 80 as standard.
I personally prefer 190 for track use with pressure reduced.

  10. Think what Bradders is getting at is that even if you go 190, it would have been a '50' profile, which I believe is pretty old hat these days, I think they use 55 profile 190 tyres now, but that's a big tyre to stick in there really. I personally think I would go with a 180/55 or even maybe a 180/60 (I know... I am a maveric) to try and give the best of both worlds, as the bike is similar power to a 899 and that is lovely with the 180/60.

  11. For performance 180/60 supercorsa

For big balls look (assuming a 6inch rim, mcant remember) sling a 200 baby on there

  12. As far as I am aware, the 190 gives you more side grip at the slight expense of turn in over the 180.
So the 748 used the 180 section for faster flickability and the 916 etc the 190 for better grip and drive with the extra bhp.
    Could be wrong.

  14. Peroni, it would be nice to know why you disagree??

  15. Ive had all of these on my 748 (5.5 rim width) Be carefull with the 60 profile as it may/will expand at speed and rub against the swingarm at the front,
ive settled on 180/55 , even these have different profiles brand to brand.

  16. Guessing because a tall 180 gives way more side grip than a flat 190

  17. 916 still a low powered machine, nowt quick. It was a fashion thing from the factory was the 190

  18. If you have a 180/55 vs 190/50 its probably very close (peroni will do the maths ;) ) but a 190/55 is needed for more side grip than a 180/55. If you want side grip and it will fit go 200/60 or 195/65 which is a tad taller even than the 200. But...a of the era 190 will be similar to a 180 of the era
