Think you will get more for your money with a tranny, startline transporters are basic, try to look for a trendline 102, good deals on pre reg t5's now, as you stated be residuals are good, part ex'do my t5 last year, had it for 5 years and lost 5k, got this one now.
MAte has had loads of vans over the years from T4's/5's to Sprinters, Vitos, etc. He's recently bought the new Vivaro and says it's the best van he's ever driven. also it was half the price of the VW equivalent
The Vivaro is a real ugly thing, not sure about it's motors....i imagine they'll be Renault??? The ford is returning 8litres per 100km (not sure what that is in MPG) and it's 155bhp.......

Vivaro is supposed to be about 47mpg combined - heard good things about it and don't mind it's looks really... can't find any base T5's pre reg bargains on Google yet
if maintenance costa are an issue look in to servicing costs. a lot of city driving? avoid vehicles with DPF which will mean buying 3-4years old.
Usually nothing - will get some additional seats for when needed that I can unbolt - bikes from time to time. Using more like an everyday Car / recreational vehicle really.
Vw approved used vans is the best place to look,I can only speak of the transporter as not had anything else for the last 7 years, real mpg over 10 k is 38 and my improve with miles, personally never had dpf issues yet and never notice it regen
yip only seen several dpf issues up here. my mates garage in the city has seen plenty. sure they are fine now. just v.expensive if they go wrong
7.5 tonne Merc rigid with 20' body. Partial width drop down rear tailgate to allow ride-in bike access with servicing bay. Full cooking facilities, log burner, chairs and room for a water bed.
I've just rented a 15 plate Renault Master, then a few weeks later a 65 plate transit. Ignoring spec (the transit was basic, the Renault loaded) the transit was slower, had a few ridiculous design features such as its terrible cap less fuel filler, and was both slower and less economical than the Renault. The Renault returned 46mpg at 70 - 80 mph with air con on, the transit struggled to return 30mpg at 65mph (no air con fitted) The transit was also rather ugly, although the Renault wasn't exactly an oil painting. To be fair though, both drove very well, and both vans were equally quiet (as in VERY quiet on the road) the transit only had 152 miles on it, so it is possible it will be improved when it's run in, but I personally found the Renault the better van, either one could function perfectly well as a car, both were genuinely pleasant to drive.
