1198 Backfiring On 1198s...

  1. Hello

I've had my 1198S for a few months now - still getting used to it, totally different to the S1000RR I had before. I have a question about backfiring - I never expected the bike to be quiet (!) but this seems a bit excessive. Whenever I close the throttle there seems to be a lot of backfiring; if I do this to slow through engine braking down it's much worse. The bike has slash-cut termis fitted, and since I get the "1198 Racing" text scrolling across the dash when I turn the ignition on I assume I have the DP ECU fitted?

Maybe I just need to get used to it (or stop closing the throttle so much!)?

    TIA

    Andrew

  2. Stock DP "race" ECU is still a compromise so you will have some over fuelling especially at the extremes. As I am sure some will be quick to advise, proper remap is the solution. Andy

  3. Some do it even with a custom map ;)

  4. Usually it's a sign of lean fuel mix. Could be a tweak at your dealer to set the mix properly, or an air leak.
You can of course go for a full custom fuel map, bit that'll be ~£500.

  5. Hi Andy, I had similar probs on my 1198sp, speak to the guys down at moto rapido, i purchased a full 70mm system and sent them my ecu to tweak, i can't begin to tell you how much of an improvement this made both to power gains and smoothness, totally transformed my bike.

  6. Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll have a word with the dealer I got the bike from - as i said I wasn't expecting a quiet smooth engine but I don't think it should be this rough. It's certainly a lot worse than my SP3.

  7. Smooth and backfiring are very different things. Mine is lovely and tractable right through the rev range and very torqey. 167 bhp and 97ft/lbs makes it shift. Backfiring on the overrun occurs, but does not effect the drive through rev range.

  8. Check the simple stuff first. Exhaust gaskets ok?

  9. My 1098 used to run really badly, spitting and backfiring after I put Termis on it even with the DP ECU and it being adjusted by my dealer. I fitted a Power Commander 3 and had a custom map put on it. It ran like a dream after that. I may be wrong here but sending your ECU off to be tweaked can't be as good as having the bike put on a dyno and it being tweaked specifically to your bike as every bike is slightly different.

  10. That sounds more sensible, but I'll check the obvious thingsfirst (e.g.leaks etc).

  11. on my aprilia the back fire was either throttle bodies out of balance, leaking vacuum hoses or stator burning out.
Ducati probably completely different but i'll get to learn this :)
