I am looking at changing my touring machine Currently have an ST3 which is great but fancy something different and newer Have been looking at MTS and my current thinking is that the 2013 on touring model or GT suits my needs however couple of questions - I see a lot of clocks have been replaced and there is suggestion of moisture ingress / clocks failing Is this a universal problem and has it been solved on later bikes? Is there a 'fix' or should I expect it will happen? Is the GT taller in the seat than the standard touring? Is the wind protection better on the GT ie better screen and can you fit the better screen to all models? Is there really that much difference between a pre 2013 with ohlins and a post 2013 skyhook? Thanks for any pointers
I've got a 2014 GT, new, moved from 100,000 miles on FJRs. I now have 13,000 miles (mostly touring) on this one and the only problem has been the front wheel not being properly aligned after a tyre change and some reluctance on the part of the electro-wethergonimbles to change mode and/or heated grips functions. It does work, but not easily (I am a bit of a luddite with these things, though). I did have an exhaust valve replaced under warranty, but that's it. I'm 6'1" but with short legs and it fits me better than the FJR and is more comfortable both for me and passenger. I find no noticeable difference in wind protection from the much more heavily faired FJR, other than in the legs. Handling is on another planet and I should have done this years ago, although the springs struggle when fully loaded on the curvy stuff. As a bonus, much more luggage space for Herself's hair dryer etc., but panniers are quite wide and pannier catches take a bit of getting used to, but work fine. Longest day's run so far (with passenger) has been Edinburgh to Poole (475 miles) with no complaints from passenger. Don't know if this is any use.
No issue with clocks from me. A clutch issue and few lost bolts but I think that was dealer fault. Changed dealer who updated the clutch for free and love my multi 2014s. Been to France and back twice with no mechanical issues.
...I have a gt 63 plate, screen is bigger touring type as standard, seat is the same height but it's gel touring which is better.Post 13 bike is twin spark a bit smoother better fuel economy up to 54mpg. Clocks have been fixed the light use to 'bleed' through. The gt has most add on's as standard which is why I bought it and the matt black looks understated but it's a Ducati so ain't without it's problems! Good luck with your search. vj
Speedo or clocks are the same on all models 2010 2014, so they changed at the DVT model. Yes they can all suffer from water ingress and the replacement part is exacfly the same. Try not to soak the speedo during washing. It's the rear connection that is weak. The symptoms start with a dim glimer on the Neutral LED whenever another is lit (normally main beam or low fuel). Most never get any worse. Some (only a few) go crazy and need to be replaced. Cost is at least £700 and on the earlier models will fewer than mileage to zero.
Thanks all Sat across one at the weekend and they are tall! Am trying one with the lower seat tomorrow we shall see - need to be able to get both feet a bit down at least as worried re road camber stopping Otherwise the bike looked great up close - fingers crossed
I have had no problem with the clocks misting on my 2014 GT, but the rear brake has needed attention. The clocks on my Panigale, were changed under warranty. I really like the MTS when out with my wife as pillion, but it rarely gets picked otherwise as my day to day bike is an F800GS, the Panigale or RD250 for dry sunny days. I did test a DVT when one of them was in for a service as I also did with the XR1000. If I was replacing the GT it would be for the DVT.
