1200 DVT Heated Grips

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Quentin Reynolds, Oct 5, 2015.

  1. This is very subjective -- anybody think that the heated grips fitted to the DVT are not up to the job. Compared to the old Mutley and my wife's Diavel they are distinctly feeble to me.

  2. Make sure your dealer knows so its passed up the chain of command.

  3. I can't make a direct comparison with the old Mutley but I've been satisfied with the DVT's grips....although I've only needed to have them on the low setting, so far.

  4. Mine are very toasty. Only needed the low setting so far.

  5. Quentin. Agree.... the heated grips on my 2010 Multi were much better. I have to have them on High to get the same effect that I used to get on Medium...

  6. I have mine on high on my early morning rides and its OK if temps above 6 or 7 - when temp starts getting to close on 0 - 4'C - I find my fingers get cold - palms OK

I have thought about using heated inner gloves too.

I asked dealer to look at it some time ago - he said they were in spec.

But not as good as the ones on my VFR1200 previously

My Scrambler grips are similar to Multistrada also - good for down to 5 degrees - but lower than that and my fingers get cold on long rides (>70 miles)

  7. have to agree Quent. The grips on my K13S were never used above the low setting as far too toasty on full. On my DVT they were on max and then not that good. I thought I read somewhere that they improved after a software update - or is the memory going ... again:(

  8. Agree the DVT grips are utter chod. My yam XT's Black Mountain Ebaytastic £33 grips are far superior and olde skool adjustable knob allows very subtle heat changes.....very disappointing Bologna but then Italy must be slightly warmer all year round :-/

  9. My 2010 multi ones are insane. I've yet to properly use high as that'll melt your gloves off. It's mid or low for me. High could be used to terraform planets. Certainly the hottest heated grips I have used. I do still find my finger get left out a bit unless they are in direct contact with the grip.

  10. I agree my 2010 heated grips are superb, very rarely get to use max setting, and if I do its only for a quick 10 mins blast then switch back to medium setting

Looks like there is an issue with the DVT grips, I would be peeded off as well if that's how they are after been used to my 2010 multi

  11. I haven't got a DVT but the ones on my Scrambler are barely warm compared with the ones on my 2010 which would burn your fingers off on high. I do recall though that there were a high amount of failures with the previous heated grips. Maybe Ducati have altered the software, reducing the heat to prevent them from burning out?

  12. My DVT ones are nice and toasty even in medium position. Had the pre DVT Multi and I think both of them are the same although it depends if I have summer or winter gloves on at the time and the time of day.

  13. I stand corrected following my.y initial grip remarks earlier on this thread.... think I may have had it on low pressing it too many times as tried them again TOASTY!

  14. I thought the DVT bikes were really thin grips compared to the `13 GT I tried. Grip puppies would fatten them up just nice :D

  15. I felt that the DVT model had smaller diameter grips than previous models. Something had changed as my hands ached a bit after a long day on the bike. I added Grip Puppies and have had no problems since. The heated grips seem to adequate even with the Grip Puppies.

  16. Grip puppies ? Hopefully no animals were hurt in thus upgrade ?:dizzy:

  17. I took my bike to my dealer for warranty work this Saturday and a software update was done, I don't know if its me but my grips seem hotter than before and the engine runs differently. If anything better than before, maybe I am going mad...the grips were a bit useless until this was carried out.

  18. Hi, I'm in Australia... I have a 2012 MTS1200 with 87,000 kms on it including 2 Europe jaunts totalling about 50,000 kms. On both EU trips my heated grips failed. The first set replaced under warranty was OK, but soon as i got into the European hills, they died again. In Oz, so many owners say they fail, so its a cheap part problem rather than my luck.
I plan to graft some Oxford's onto it... does anyone know if the resistance or current draw is going to be different? Can i control them via the ECU controls?

  19. I don't know if it helps, but I've measured the resistance of the grips on my MTS. They are 7.3Ω each. The ones on my Scrambler are 10.5Ω each which may explain why they don't get so hot.
So, at say 14V when the bike is running, each grip will draw 1. 91A which is 26.8 Watts of power.
The Oxford grips say they use less than 4A of current, which fits pretty well with the Ducati ones ; 2 x 1.91 = 3.82A
So I'd say you'd be ok. Some people have replaced the heated elements only with this sort of thing

  20. Thanks Derek... It helps. Electricity is not one of my strengths. The bike will be home from EU in 2 weeks. Time for a play around.
