The time has come to change the chain and sprocket set on my 796 hyper. I was looking through a couple of options online and a lot of guys have been putting a 14t on the front, which may suit my riding as quite a lot is a busy commute, but then heard it wears the chain out quicker and top end speed slightly affected. Anyone done this? Also, which set have you gone for? I was looking at Rethnal on this link: Ducati Hypermotard 796 (excl. carrier) 11-13 Chain + Sprocket Kit Is it fairly easy to fit this yourself? Thanks
I've been looking into this too and what I've read is that if you stay with the 525 pitch you shouldn't use a 14t front sprocket as there is too much bend/strain on the chain? Also some have said the chain rubs across the swing arm and very noisy. the difference in 14t to 15 seems quite alot and will certainly loose some top end. One option is to change the rear sprocket up one or two teeth (up 3 is equivalent gearing to down 1 on the front). The 1100 uses a 42T as standard so is one more than the 796 and I'll probably go this option or maybe a 43T. The only thing I see is that most sprockets in 43T require the purchase of a new sprocket carrier? 520 is pitch ? Cheaper and lighter but doesn't last as long. I know this probably hasn't helped and insted given more to think about but I thought I'd share what little info I've found
Guess it depends on why you want to lower the gearing - I had thought about it to make it a bit smoother at round town speeds although I've read that a remap will solve the smoothness. I'm looking to get this done at some point but at present don't want to have the bike in the garage in the event it's sunny so it will be the back end of summer for that....
Hi, I hereby ressurect this thread on the offchance that you got somewhere with this! I am chasing the same info for 43T on 796 hyper. Did you get anywhere ? Thanks
Still on the old chain but not far off changing (probably during winter). Afam do direct replacement sprockets in most sizes
Yup it's cool, I thought I'd get myself a range of replies but so far you're the only one! Appreciated none the less. Early days yet, might get a few more suggestions. I've pretty much mostly posted on d ms but not much recently since the 821's came in
Looks like Afam steel are available here for around £100 & in choice of teeth numbers so 43T no prob. Seems same sprockets (damping bushes in sprocket) are used on many (but not all) single-sided S/A Duc's. Expensive because they're a pretty complex bit of machining compared to the usual type. JT quick change sprocket carrier is about £60 & sprockets £25 so pretty competitive price but they are alu' so I don't have experience of lifespan compared to steel - but only doing 3-4000m a year so probably not a big problem?
Don't worry about wear on alu rear, if you use a quality chain (I only use DID) the sprocket wears with the chain, I managed 12k on a set all year/weather.
I don't mind less top end, I can't think that I've hit the limiter in top on my hyper. That's a good tool but slightly out for the 796 the rear sprocket shows 42T so just change to 41 before you use it. Thanks for sharing it
Yeah, I never hit rev limiter in top. Not prepared to say how close I might have got either...;-) Figured I could make more use of the bike with lower gearing for real world use, not 2 mile straights & no traffic! Thanks Hyperbimduke, at least it seems like the wear on alu' sprockets is not terrifying.
Hypermotard 796 2102 Fitted 45t JT sprocket on rear - DID 525 gold chain + 2 links (106) kept the front sprocket at 15T world of difference can cruise at 70 now without the engine labouring. and so much better at low speed round town, more useable in the real world!
Hey all, I would just like to say something. After the recommendations onthis forum and elsewhere I've dropped a tooth in the front sprocket on my Hypermotard 796 2011. Holy shit! City driving now is so much smoother. It's a lot less snatchy, and the first gear feels a lot more useful. It completely fixed all the woes I had with this bike. I highly recommend it.
Have you seen any wear on the top of the swing arm? I was told the 14t reduction in diameter let’s the chain rub. That’s why I went for +4 teeth on the rear.
