748 2002 748 - Was Monoposto An Option?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by YardleyG, Oct 26, 2015.

  1. Hello all,

    A newbie so go easy on me please! :)

    I am working to get my 748 back to as close to standard as possible but am struggling with some "standard" specifics. Appreciate any help from those who might know answers to the following;

    1) I have a 2002 748 (E) in yellow. Was this available as monoposto or was it only biposto? If it was available as monoposto does anyone know the correct colours for the seat unit? I can only find references to the yellow / white paintwork from the 748S.

    2) I am assuming that the mirrors on a 2002 748 (E) were always black? Again it was the 748S that had colour matched?

    Appreciate any help.

    Graeme

  2. Hi, a 748 e was biposto (2 seat) only and it actually replaced the 'biposto' model. The mirrors were black yes, potentially only the 'R' of that year had colour matched Mirrors but the 'R' model was a single seat bike.

    Mine was a 748e in yellow, 2002 wonder if it's the same bike? Haha that would be funny

  3. would have been biposto mate, dont think any of the 748/9x6 shape bike actually had colour coded mirrors, even the R model mirrors were black.

  4. Thanks guys... that helps... just need to hunt down a biposto unit now!

  5. Graeme, not sure if any of the 748s had colour coded mirrors, some 998 models may have done including the S, R and specials like the Bayliss. If you read up on the model ignore the stuff on wiki about final variations as it is rubbish. One question for you, is yours a MY01 or MY02 bike registered in 02, there are some differences, perhaps the most notable is the fairing for MY02 bikes is the same as the base 998. There were MY00-MY02 Monoposto E models built in 99-02 but these were mostly not imported into the UK except for handful (15) of MY00s built in 2000. If you need bits the S of that period is the same bike as yours (including the engine) except fairing fasteners, fuel line quick release connectors, TiN fork tubes and the 5 spoke wheels. As far as colours go none of the E or S models came originally with white bits, they were all single colour with no tail or nose number boards. Some were painted prior to registration on request by one or two dealers. If you want to learn the details Ian Falloon has a couple of books worth checking out, his 'Standard Catalogue of Ducati Motorcycles' and 'Ducati Desmoquatro Superbikes' both have chapters listing many of the detail changes by MY and also the production numbers by year and model up to 2001. Also it is worth checking the construction date for your bike as often they do not get registered for quite a while after they are built. Most MY02s were built in 2001 for example and many of those were not registered until 2003 and even later.

  6. 748sp had colour coded mirrors

  7. Thanks. I spoke with a Ducati dealer today and they said mine was a 2001MY... i'll have a look in to those books you refer to thank you. Are they print only or available online?

  8. Hi - Both S and R era models had coloured mirrors and colour codes are the same for all three models, E, S and R. Look here for paint code info. Paint Codes btw, I have been told that yellow is thee worst colour to match, so if painting, I'd probably plan to paint all the fairings and tank. Just a thought.

    As far as I remember, only the S came with the factory option of a Mono or Bip seat. Subframes from the E and S are the same, so not 100% on that. The E was Bip and R was Mono only. Picture is of my bike, Nov '02 registered with Mono seat and coloured mirrors from new.

    And most definitely, buy Ian Falloon's book - so much great info in there.
