696 Petrol And Oil Smells

  1. Hi

I bought an 899 earlier in the year and decided it's too pretty to ride all through winter and commute on so I got a 2008/2009 Monster 696 in white second hand off a dealer.

It has just over 4K miles on the clock and has been regularly serviced but not really ridden in the last three years, previous owners have only taken it to the MOT testing.

The bike is very clean and tidy overall however I've put 500 miles on it in the last few weeks and when I pull up in traffic / stop I get a burning oil smell. I can't find any visible leaks. So if any one has any pointers where to look I'd appreciate it?

Also when the bike has been standing in the garage there's a strong ish whiff of petrol. Is this because it's got carbs? Or is there a bigger problem? I googled trying to research and see if these were common issues and saw in America there is some class action against Ducati for faulty plastic fuel tanks.

So far I've only removed/moved the tank and fairing enough to get to the battery.

The oil level is spot on the max mark.

I can't see any obviously dodgy petrol lines.

Should I dismantle it and have a proper look under the tank and airbox? I'd like to work out what the problem is (if any) before the 3 months warranty expires.

    Cheers Liam

  2. 696 has fuel injection.
Could it be the smell of the catalytic converters in the exhausts?

  3. Had a 696 as a service bike against my 899, same observation with that mate, my house & warehouse unit at work smell like a petrol station , although Maggy from accounts seems more chirpy coz of the high so it's not all bad..

  4. I'm so confused. My 696 has a "choke" so I thought it had carbs ... which was confusing me. After a bit of googling turns out it's a cold idle switch for FI engines. :/ No it's not coming from the exhaust or cats.

    Hehe. Still doesn't seem normal.

    Cheers, Liam

  5. I have a 696 and it's not whiffy at all.
I think it's too pretty to run over winter.

  6. ... the 696 is pretty ... but my other bike is an 899 so it loses :)

I had the 696 looked over by local ducati dealer, they found no problems so I've stopped worrying and kept riding.

  7. I put 35000 miles on an 2011 miles from new over two years. Faultless.
ACF50 helped in the salt months.

  8. I had a 696 and that had the same whiff off fuel in the garage. My current m1100s stinks of fuel when garaged and he done for the last 5 years. 899 , 848 and 1199 don't smell at all
