thanks for all the feedback guys i will try and answer as many questions as i can. To start with because of the design and build of the garage the door has to be to the side. it will be 4ft wide which is what i had fitted to a friends garage and it was more than wide enough. The issue with floor is that it will be wooden as i am having one of the sectional buildings put in which means i dont need to do any work to the patio it is going to sit on so save a few penny's there. I think i will be going for the gym style. I'm guessing that's what you have d8mok? the same as below The TV is in there as I wont be downing tools to watch the nfl or the racing it will also be linked up to a pc so that if i want a wiring diagram blown up I can get it up on there. The sofa is if I want to have a 15 minute break I don't really want the Mrs chewing my ear for sitting on the sofa in my work gear plus its about 200 ft from where the workshop is to the house and I cba to trek backwards and forwards. At least I can get some peace and quiet down there I know I will be welding and grinding so may lay some of the metal flooring down or get a steel top for part of the work bench to protect it. I am hoping to run an air line up and along in the roof as it will be pitched so there is more than enough space and have it drop down a foot or two to the side of the centre of the bike lift if that makes sense. Lighting wise i am going for 4 twin tube 5 foot stip lights and also some spot lights over the work bench in case I need the extra and maybe one of the wall mounted movable lamps with a magnifier for if I'm doing anything small or fiddely The walls and roof all have struts supporting them as you can see below so to keep it warm i will insulate and board then also get one of the oil filled small rads as they are brilliant and a very low fire risk. i do also have this place which will be say behind where i intend on doing much of the "dirty" work or spraying
My tiles aren't gym tiles as they don't take weight / spills. You need proper garage tiles. I can try to find my receipt out if u like from where I bought them from? Mine are laid straight onto my garage concrete floor. Needed a rubber mallet and a jigsaw to cut the edges. Took us about a day in total but well worth it.
If you can that would be awesome. I've found loads on line but you cant tell the quality just from the pictures
So I haven't posted in a while as I have been very busy with getting the workshop sorted unfortunately not in the way I hoped. First of all paid for the 26x14 workshop to be built at £2090 I was quite happy with the price and this also included a 4x5 shed for storage and to house my compressor so it’s not in there with me making noise and pissing me off. Then it was on to the tools I felt like a kid in a sweet shop. I had some left over from when I was a mechanic but had a lot of gaps to fill so I now have a very nice 72” wide stainless steel tool box which looks amazing and had more than enough room to hold everything. I also go myself the below: Full set of facom spanners 6mm-32 Palm ratchets Brake hose spanners Long and short pliers Torx bits Screwdriver set Extension set Hammers Spray guns Air tools Dodo juice mop/polisher Dodo juice cleaning set (I recommend this stuff to everyone makes auto glym look like fair liquid) Bike lift Parts tumbler Parts washer Bench grinder Vice While all that was on its way I ripped down the old shed and had a bit of fun playing with the asbestos walls. Got the 5 odd tonnes of concrete laid down for the base. All going well everything on schedule, now the problem is that was all done over feb / march. Its mid-May and they guy who was meant to be building my workshop is nowhere to be seen I’ve had little or no communication form him and when I have its been an excuse as to why he hasn’t built it yet. I have sent several letters and messages to him stating that if it is not with me by the end of the month I will be taking him to court. The problem is I was planning to run a business from the workshop so not only has my bike been outside since Jan I have been turning work away on a weekly basis. I have been promised it will be with my by the end of the month but I’m not holding my breath as the last time I spoke to him he said the reason it hasn’t been done is because he was taken to court by someone else and the wiped him out so he hasn’t had the money to buy wood to build it yet I paid up front for it all. So if anyone has any advice please pitch in it would be greatly appreciated
I like this thread mate, very interesting and some of it makes me jealous I'd like my exhaust polished when you offer the service, where are you based? The rear number boards you fitted, where are they from? The only one i can find is 4 separate pieces, which i don't like so much. Thanks.
The ones i had were in 4 separate parts as well it just took a bit of extra time to get them lined up. Im based near portsmouth and would be happy to do it for you. im able to do the polishing now so when ever you need it doing give me a shout
I asked on that link if there is any reason the kit wouldn't fit the 1198 swell. probably a daft question but wanted to be sure. The eBay seller mentioned about going for the bi xenons otherwise you lose your full beams, is that true?
They should fit the 1198 and you dont need the bi ones as one light is standard and the other side is high beam but with hids you rarely need the hb as they are so bloody bright yeh it would make sense to have one but have the step there made the difference between £250 in concrete and about £500 plus it would of taken twice as long. Considering we had to move all 4 tones of the stuff by hand about 100 meters from drive to base i wasn't up for doubling that workload. Im just going to put pad stones down which will also give me the ability to have an agricultural style grate to jet wash bikes off so the water and dirt runs away rather than sitting on the ground splashing everywhere.
so i haven't posted in ages as I've been busy learning several different trades to get this workshop done. below is how it went all of the walls were made from cls stud work as i could get this in the car while i was waiting for wickes to piss about with my delivery of the timber for the floor, roof and other bits i then cladded the front and side wall as that can be seen from the house so needs to look a little bit nicer the cladding was fairly easy to get on and managed that in an evening along with the other 8 or so wall sections that would be covered with ply finally wickes pulled their finger out and thanks to their cock up i got £150 credit and 10% off all of my orders next job was to move the 2 tones of timber to the end of the garden ready to be cut and screwed together. once that was done during the evenings in the week i started getting the base down and had to very quickly learn carpentry. The next thing was getting it all level and sturdy due to the step in the base how ever this was not too hard and made good use of the 100+ 40cm off custs i had from the floor joists and wall sections. Got the walls painted thanks to the wife and sister in law
yeh, shes a good egg but rides her self so ill be paying that back in servicing for the rest of my life yeh hes £2k better off but i have a piece of paper from the courts that says he owes me £9.5k but he doesn't have a penny to his name so they are locking the slimy shit up for fraud next installment will be tomorrow
so once i had all the wall sections covered and ready it was barn raising time and it all went pretty smooth this was the end of day 1 on that weekend so it had gone from a frame on the floor to something that resembled a building The next morning was a hard and early start after doing 7-8 the day before the roof started taking shape
absolutely loving this thread, nice twist to the plot going from a bike build, to a workshop being built, to building yourself, glad the arsehole that took your money is getting locked up
I've got a quick question if you don't mind, how easy is the HID fitment and where did you put the ballast? Also where did you get the underseat carbon from? I'm looking for one at the mo.
It's a 2 minute job to fit the bulbs, they are just twist and plug in. I (with a 20mm spade bit) bored a hole in the bottom of each of the black plastic caps that cover the rear of the lights, and ran the cables through this that go off to the ballasts - these i cable tied to the underside of the mirrors, on the magnesium coloured 'arms'. I can show you a picture tomorrow if you like, if this doesn't make sense?
