1299 Running In

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Rjkc600, Nov 14, 2015.

  1. Guys.

Moto Rapido said I have to do 600 miles running it at max 6000 rpm.

This is fine and I'm doing it without issue, as it still covers 100mph.

The owners manual however, states that 600miles to 1000miles is another running in period with max 7000 rpm.

I want to run it in correctly, but also feel I should follow what MR say.

    Any thoughts?

  2. Give it to me and i will run it in for you.

I seem to remember my Multi was 1000 miles, i think most bikes are now.

  3. Ride it like you stole it. You won't harm it.

  5. I'm going to run it in for 600 miles at least. If it was a Japanese bike then I wouldn't be overly worried, but with ducati's I prefer to be a little more sympathetic with it.

So is the general view 1000 miles for those of us that are running in the bike?

  6. when I bought 1199 ducati leeds said ride it as normal just don't bounce it off the limiter, but your bike fully understand your choice good luck,,

  7. I ran my 899 by the book for the first 2-300 miles. Then became very bored and road like I would normally, just not hitting the red line or very high revs.

Use the revs, plenty of engine braking. Don't run about in the wrong gear.

After my first service at 600 miles or whatever it was, I rode the wheels off of it.

However I ALWAYS make sure I'm up to temp before hammering it, at least 5 minutes plus of riding.

  8. In the nicest possible way mate, this threat will only go one way! Like the running in threads always do, which everyone having a different opinion and posting links to 'industry experts' who's opinion even seems split.

My view is 6k rpm but keeping nice and varied usage, no loading the engine so it chugs along! That's worse than revving it too hard. I think the main thing is to get some good heat cycles into it, so warm it up, ride a good 40-50 mile trip and let it cool completely and once it's had a few heat cycles it will be absolutely fine.

I've never had an issue with running in and tbh most are started and run on a rolling road at the factory to check essential safety aspects so just take it reasonably and go from there.

My CBR btw had 'ride with reasonable care' in the manual and 'avoid more than 3 quarter revs' which tbh seems like the best advise

  9. Its pretty easy to run in according to the health and safety malarky.

  10. Do what you think. Personally I thrash them from the crate. But here's a thing. MR recently totally rebuilt my 1098R engine and ran it in on their dyno which entails thrashing the tits off it. Race teams also do this with brand new bikes I believe.
So that's cleared that up then! Huh???

  11. But race teams rebuild their engines on a very regular basis and are only after maximum power, not longevity.

  12. True. What's longevity?

  13. I'll do my 600 mile run in as MR recommended.

My question was about to 1000 mile/7000rpm thing.

I suspect the Ducati diagnostics on these modern bikes can see maximum rpm so maybe they'll see if it exceeds the run in maximum and cause warranty issues?

  14. You don't run your car in so why do bikes need to be?? I don't understand that really

Everyone's different so run it in how you like, I remember reading some articles a while ago that said bikes that weren't run in made more power

  15. Yeah that's true. More power if thrashed from day 1 at the inevitable cost of reliably long term I suspect.

  16. Hi Rjkc600

I took mine to Valencia for 3 days with around 900 miles on the clock. Advice from Riders was to go for it! No problems and bike was amazing. Watched the oil and always warmed it up nicely. I didn't completely thrash it and stayed away from the rev limiter, but plenty of fun anyway. Enjoy!

  17. I have heard of people running them in on track days before lol.

Literally giving them hell with 25 miles on the clock haha

  18. I have heard that too. From you. Just now :)

  19. had a few race bikes built from raceways ,brand new out the showroom 25 miles on dyno job done fully run in, never missed a beat but then they were yamahas not ducati
