  1. ' Hi Everyone - Been Looking At A Ducati Sport's Bike To Buy & Just Seen A 2006 746s With Only 2000 Mile's On It , 1 Previous Owner / Price £6000 - Good Buy . . . ? Been Riding Jap 1000's For 12 Year's Now ( R1 , ZX10R , GSXR ) & Want A Change - Like The 749's & 999's - Any Idea's What To Check Etc . . . ? '

  2. ' Sorry Everyone I Meant 749s ( Instead Of 746s )

  3. You can edit it out :)

  4. Is it facelift model with red frame, black wheels, black box swingarm. They fetch more money.
For £6k I would want it serviced with news belts and shims checked, new tyres and extras like termi and hugger etc.
    As a guide a 15k-20k miles 05-06 749S should fetch £4.5k-£5k
Low miles is not always a good thing if its been laid up for long periods. Great bikes, if you like it buy it.

  5. ' Hi Guy's - Yes It Has A Red Frame & Black Swingarm . . . I Take Its A Facelift One Then , Is That Good News ( Sorry If I Sound Thick Guys ) . What Are They Like Power Wise & To Ride . . . ? '

  6. Good news-Facelift more desirable. 05-06 749S listed at 116bhp, 6 more than base model and better suspension(showa). Good reliable bikes, comfortable for a sports bike, bit of a pig in town and cook your leg in summer in traffic.

  7. If you've come from a JAP 1000 background you will be dissapointed with the 749 power. I rode GSXRs/R1s/etc for years and ended up buying a 999 about 3 years ago, it was a superb bike but I always wished it had a little more power so sold it. Depending on your budget I would go for a 999 or a 1098.

  8. I just got my first Ducati as a p/x - a mint mint 2004 4,800 mile 749 had 10 services!!! And just had belts etc.Totally standard with big history file, data tool top of range remote alarm, carbon exhaust slipcover and battery optimiser

  9. I think you need to try a 749 first as I listened to all the underpowered, uncomfortable comments and I am converted! I've had just about every 750cc and up bike there is to have (nudging 60 but can still get my knee down and I don't mean while hoovering) - Gixers,Blades,2 x Busas and a busa turbo putting out big bhp,Zx10,Choppers,Quads and Supermotos but no bloody Harley's! Ride a 749 - it's the mutts nutts!

  13. Has it been in use recently? Dukes dont like being neglected. Have a haggle, its priced at top dealership price and a dealer would offer a bit of warrentry plus if you dont buy it he'll be lucky to sell before spring.
The belts need changing every 2yrs regardless of milage.
A belt(short) service inc oil/filter+belts is best part of £500 depending where you go.
The belts cost £135 from ducati but @Exige on here can help you there if you need them.
999/749 series are pretty sorted bikes so nothing really to look out for, but dukes are a bit of an aquired taste if your used to il4's and can take a while to click with so bear that in mind if you have a test ride and it feels strange.

  14. Not really. That's just what Ducati tells you.

  15. Both Ducati and CCW will tell you this. Before trading CCW belts I went to 3 as I do little miles on any one bike, perhaps 3000 max on 3 years. I won't change my personal view but officially it's 2 years for either.
As CCW appear stronger and more accurate in the tests carried out I feel more comfortable with the CCW belts if pushing the time line (this was my unbiased view, but now I import it has to be classed as a biased view :) )

  16. Yep I change mine every 3 seasons on my 999 and I do fairly high milage but recomended is 2yr or 12000miles. Belts staying in one position for months on end is a bad thing imho. I turn the motor a few degrees via back wheel every couple of months when its hibernating.

  17. Depends whether he wants a change because of the huge power that means most of the time he's phoning it in... I have a 2003 749s and don't find it slow on the roads, perhaps if I was a trackday regular and a bit more superhuman in my riding ability I'd echo that but the 749s is more than enough fun on the road, and if you're regularly seeing the little red triangle flashing up then you're still going plenty quick enough :D

One thing it might be worth to consider is that a 749s ridden reasonably with brio will return much less than 100 miles to a tankful, so you might find that the main thing you can't pass is a petrol station!

Never ridden a 999 but would love one, seems like the natural progression from the 749 but TBH I never get anywhere near the limits of the smaller bike and I'd probably find that I'd be less inclined to let the bigger bike off its lead, as I'd be the weak component.

So don't know if that helps or not, but certainly compared to earlier Ducati 750-class machines the 749s is excellent fun, and TBH if you're finding that the capabilities of the bike rather than the rider is the limiting factor then you should be on the track and winning races! :D

  18. I moved from years of Jap liter bikes to a 749s and love it. My history is pretty much every iteration of fireblade and a couple of R1's. on a particular ride out i let a mate on my blade and jumped on his cbr600F (DFS sofa suspension etc..) but one thing i loved was the ability to pin it all over the place. It seems I'd gotten into the habbit with the liter bikes of short shifting and using the extra torque available, it planted the idea of trying a smaller capacity bike next time.

Long story short i got offered a good deal on a 749s and so far (one season) i'm hooked. its handles well, it has a decent mid range and i can really give it some welly. added to that the looks the sound, oh the sound! and the genuinely high level of feedback when you push it hard and i'm loving it. normally in the winter i'm thinking of changing but i cant wait for some nice winter rides and spring!
