Wire Wheels Anyone?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by JimDane, Dec 3, 2015.

  1. I really like the looks of wire wheels, has anyone succeeded finding Wire wheels that fits on the SS?

Mine is a '97 900SS carb model and I don't want to change to 999 forks and brakes to be able use the (way too heavy) Classic wheels.

I don't mind making spacers and smaller stuff but I want the SS to stay original apart from the wheels.

  2. I vaguely remember something on the UKMOC site.

  3. You could try Kineo wheels? That's what's fitted on the MV Dragster and they make tubeless rims. Not cheap but....

  4. You could have a word with Max (Pompone) on the UKMOC forum.
He sells spoked wheels via his Desmoperformance Parts (DPP) operation.

  5. I accept that wire wheels look very nice when new...........but they look awful when not kept clean and of course, they are one of the first things that could cause an MOT failure (in the UK anyway).....also depending on how they are spoked, tubeless tyres may not be an option.

Fitting them to an SS, the rear may be easy, but the hub and speedo drive have to be clearly sorted for the front.

  6. Sport Classics with spokes had different brake calipers, no pistons on the inner side so slimmer for clearance.

  7. Theres a place in the woods east of Salisbury that builds wheels.

Wire wheels! I would leave them at the back of the garage? They undoubtedly look better and very period.A guy recently contacted me and offered me a pair of original spoked wheels for my Suzuki and they would look but I ride it not look at it!

  14. Wow, that is exactly the stuff I'm talking about!

I know another Danish Dude who is doing the fairing and seat on his SS right now - I'm waiting a bit to see how much trouble he is having :) The good examples like this one looks just right but if you get it just a bit wrong it looks totally hopeless somehow.

My SS is already a 'Nuda' with the smallest possible fairing.

  15. Carbon 5 spokes on that, for me, if you are going to chuck money at wheels.

  16. Another SS spoker. Brat stylee image.png

  17. Yeah, I agree, carbon 5 spokes. Certainly suit an SS if its standardish in appearance

  18. That bike is one ugly pig.

  19. This one uses wheels from a Sport Classic but be warned, the 4 piston calipers don't clear the spokes. The guy who built it had to get some metal machined from the inside faces of each caliper to get clearance.
