916 R Model Or Not?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Not Carl Fogarty, Jan 9, 2016.

  1. Did the early 916 R models still have 3 spoke wheels? I've looked on google images.

I'm not sure if this guy is talking BS, his story seems a bit strange and I rather not listen to BS.
What things are obviously different about a R model, Folks etc..

  2. I think there might me a slight whiff of something there as I don't believe they ever made a 916 R :)

  3. There was something called a 916 Racing available to race teams but there never was a 916R made for the road. First homologation specials were the sp and the first R was the 748R. Andy

  6. So what is the BS ? If it is being claimed that it is an ex race bike, it could well be although you would have to confirm that through research. If it is being offered as a road bike, chances are that it is not. From first hand experience, genuine ex race engines do not make usable road engines. Andy

  7. Probably one of the best people on this forum to talk to is Tom Irvine. He has restored ex racing bikes and trades in ex racing bikes and parts. Andy

  8. Thanks for the replies, I don't need to look into this further. It's a bit sad really.

Basically this Guy knows I have a Duke and this was his cousins bike.. yes one of those, it did 600mph (rolls eyes)
(I did not want to have this conversation and did not start it)

So I told him to ask his cousin if it was an R model and he said yes...

I thought there was something iffy, the whole story was strange.
He said he sold it for 4K because he had to move abroad. Who sells a bike like that last minute or for lots less than market value. You'd shift it in half a day if you sold it for 2 or 3K cheaper than market value or you'd leave it with someone in the UK to sell and transfer the funds if you were a professional working overseas.

It was a road bike with gold frame and gold 3 spokes, it looked like a normal bike.

    Case closed.

  9. No never a 916R for the road,but how about a 916 superlight?
I have a original ducati brochure,i think from '95 and there you had the option for a 916 superlight.
It had also a different price as a biposto.
Or was that just another name for a strada(monoseat)?

    Henk!!!

  10. 916R existed in '97 and '98 and was the customer spec race bike. Basically a race ready SPS without the lights etc. and race ready chassis/engine/electronics. The RS if you like of the early years. Very trick and rare.

  11. The bike apparently "now" is not an R model, it was an SPS with a 955 cc conversion.
To be honest, these types of guys are people I try to distance myself from.

I don't think I can make it clear enough, the mentality.
Thanks for the input though. It was as I suspected.

  12. That is a rare bike then.
    955cc SPS did exist.

  13. I'm growing a little bit tired and bored of this BS.

I've since seen better pictures of the bike, Showa front forks and I'm not even sure if the rear shock is Ohlins.
I do think it could be an SPS (carbon mud guard) or it's not and had bits put on it - which also would not surprise me
(I'm not a Ducati expert) either way.

This topic had finished after the first comments about 916R on here.

The guy back pedaled and said it was an SPS he had bored out to 955cc.
I don't give a crap, just that this guy was giving it the big one and telling porky pies when I did not even want to talk about bikes. I thought it looked too basic and the story seemed a bit...errrr

  14. sounds like he selling very limited edition of Ducati 916BS

  15. 916SPS was actually 996cc so it must have been down sleeved to get to 955cc!!

Walk away...the guy is spinning a big yarn!
