916 Shock Spring. Paint, Powder Or What?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by IainT916, Feb 15, 2016.

  1. My rear shock spring (standard OEM Showa) has a frosting of rust so needs a little bit of TLC. But because it's going to be flexing in normal use, is paint OK, or do I powder coat, or something else?

  2. It matches your frame, typical Ducati anti corrosion quality :Angelic:

  3. Yep, paint code for all Ducati colours = "Hida di Rusta" :tearsofjoy:

  4. I did one with smooth Hammerite once. It was a good-ish match and lasted well.

  5. Thanks Ricky. Was worried that paint+flexing=flaking but if you've tried it and it works I might try it myself:thumbsup:

  6. The Showa on my 748 was far worse than that, got it blasted & powdered, it's stood up to the elements better than the ohlins on the 998 :)

  7. Thanks Toby. Paint worked for Ricky, powder worked for you, so maybe I'm over analysing. Thought I'd have to do something fancy/smancy like shrink wrapping but I'll sleep easy tonight :handfist:

  8. You can use a flex agent in paint which will improve it's ability to not crack under movement of the spring, although I doubt it would crack if prepared and painted properly.

Personally I would probably have the spring powder coated and ask someone who is knowledgeable and capable to do the job not to put on a heavy coat.

These people know their business and do all my work for me.

  9. I used Maldon shotblasting for all the powder coating on my KH project, fast turn around and a good job.

  10. I powder coated mine and while I had it apart I repainted the rest image.png image.jpeg

  11. ^ that's where I am with mine at the moment. Did you take the shock in for service then when they had it dismantled, you painted the spring and shock body?
Just trying to work out which is the best way of doing this...
Looks like yours came out mint, BTW, @VtwinDave
    Cheers, Ian

  12. Powder coating will be fine. Good idea to fit a hugger if not already.
