1198 Overheating In Traffic

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Seech, Mar 2, 2016.

  1. Only the 3rd time I've been out on the 1198S, but this time I went through Manchester town centre. The bike was getting pretty hot and at a set of lights, it cut out on me. The temp read around 107/108 deg C. From reading around, I should expect this overheating, but I've not read anything about it cutting out. Is it normal?? Or should I be getting it checked out?

I waited 5 minutes and restarted, which it did... Just.

It's only done <1,200 miles so wasn't expecting this!

    Thanks

  2. did the fan cut in mate?? mine usually cuts in at 107c on a hot day.

  3. Was the fan cutting in? Should have come on at low 100's from memory, maybe 103? I wouldn't expect it to cut out though unless the heat was just continuing to build.

I would suggest check the fan operation and coolant, maybe even worth getting it bleed through to ensure no air locks.

Finally, make sure the battery is topped up and operating, the stalling maybe could be caused by low voltage or poor charging and then when the fan kicks in and loads the electrical output, perhaps (and a big perhaps) it trips itself up at this point.

I would check things in order, starting with coolant levels and charging at idle

  4. I agree with @Phill748 fans come on around 103 & his checks

Not sure if applicable to 1198 but early 1098s had issues with reg/rec overheating and they fitted a shield, which I'm sure will have been done on day one on the 1198

No dash or headlamp flickering? I'd check battery voltage at 2-3k to make sure all is well with the reg/rec (as Phill alluded to as well). Reg/Recs are a well documented weak link on these bikes which is easy but not cheap to fix

  5. Thanks for the replies. Yes - I've read that the fans kick in at 104 deg C and off at 99. But I honestly am not sure if they did or not.

I had the bike delivered from Ducati mid Jan; it's had a full service incl. belts, so I should hope that the coolant has been refreshed/topped up.

I do have an issue with poor battery performance. The screen flickers (and settings are lost) when I start it up sometimes. I'm going to buy the cables and uprated battery suggested to me on here when I have time.

The dealer told me the battery was tested and is fine (or this would have been changed). But clearly it is no Jap bike at starting.

You can all call me a w*nker... but it felt good posing on my incredibly noisy Duke round the city centre streets.... until it cut out. Then I looked like a dick!

  6. Sorry... regs/recs? Rectifiers?

  7. Ducatis when ridden in our climate on open roads tend to run cool, so when we get into traffic and the temperature gauge starts to climb, we tend to get worried. The fans cut in in the low hundreds for a reason. The oil needs to get hot if it is to boil off any condensation which has found its way into the oil.
If the fans are set at less than boiling point, the water will never boil off and water in the oil is bad news, it causes corrosion and impairs the oil's lubricant properties.
Synthetic oil will take much higher temps than this and the coolant, thanks to the combination of pressurisation and the normal 50/50 ratio of coolant to water, shouldn't boil until it hits something approaching 130c, so anything below 125c shouldn't be any real problem

  8. Get the cable kit and strong battery (I favour Yuasa for the moment) and your starting performance will be transformed.
    Do it now...

  9. That is true i have had starting problems even with new sh.. ty battery.. replaced batt for yuasa added second ground cable from batt negative to starter bolt and never worried again. Bike stood all winter in garage and starts up no probs.
High temp makes it running a bit poorer and sometimes cuts off i have been worried first couple of times but now start up again and go. I think it happens less often after tb balancing and mixture trimming with ducati diag.

  10. What do you call high temperature?

  11. I would say going to 104 in traffic in the climate as it is now should take quite a while, i.e a good 10 mins into traffic? also, you would have felt the fans kick in because you will feel the heat coming onto your leg.

Reg/Rec - basically as a bike revs the alternator creates increasing amounts of power back into the battery, it 'regulates' this and ensures that the battery charges by putting around 14.3v steady into the battery and no more. (I am not an electrical expert so please everyone just take this as general advise as per my knowledge).

You can check the Voltage on the dash, there is a mode you can flick into and watch it as you rev the bike.

Anyway, my starting point would be coolant levels and condition and also actually strangely the mapping of the bike, as with the aftermarket custom map my 848 Evo did run a little cooler.

At this time of year I would expect the bike in the high 60's degree in free flowing 50+MPH speed limits, and into the high 80's in low traffic, I have had the 848 and the 899 and they are similar in that they run much cooler than the jap stuff out in free air but do get hot in traffic.

  12. The bike was running 65 deg for most of my riding 30-50 mph. 80/90 in the slower stuff. But sat at light after light in Manchester (followed by childish blasts in between) and over 100 was common.

I've ordered the exact start cables, battery will be ordered later. Bloody hope they are easy to install as I'm a dab hand at breaking things.

  13. What pipes and ecu do you have mate?

  14. That sounds pretty healthy. Cutting out isn't of course...

  15. I've got a full Termi system with race ECU. You think it may be linked?

  16. I mean 105celsius and higher

  17. That is the level at which the fans cut in, so is getting hot certainly but I would contend that it's not actually starting to overheat until it hits 120c or more and 130 is when you need to really worry because the coolant will then boil.

  18. @Seech have you actually tried starting the bike and let it sit for 10 minutes or so to warm up

Keep you eye on the water temp and you can usually see the fans through the cut out in the fairing side, when it get to about 105 C the fans should run, if not then let the bike cool and stick your finger in and try to turn the fans with your finger, they should be free and spin easily.
If they are not free as its newish (to you) I'd get the dealer to sort it, or you can whip off the fairings and look into it
If they are free to turn but not going on at 105C the most likely culprit is a fuse, fuse 7 on the fusebox and then there is also a relay check both of these are good

A more unlikely scenario but one that happened to me, if they are not filed correctly from the radiator as opposed to header the system sometimes will not circulate properly

  19. Thanks for that John. I'll give it a go when I next see it. Probably not worth going back to the dealer as it is 100 miles away and Ducati won't perform warranty work in a dealer not associated with the sale (!!!).

  20. Mine was doing similar, due to the wrong map, your's seems ok. What does it say when you turn the bike on, 1198???
