996 Stm Slipper Clutch

  1. Hi all, not sure what's going on here, however the clutch engages gears ok, but starts to slip when the revs hit around 6000.

Bikes been standing for 4 years and seemed ok when it was parked up.

I wouldn't mind returning the clutch, but if it's to expensive May go back to a standard set up.

Is there any way of adjusting the clutch ???

  2. Different depth spring caps allow you to vary the compression of the spring. Sadly I have only seen this on the 999RS which had 4 different sized caps. I have never used the STM before so I don't know if it is similar. Normally I would look at the pack thickness because as the friction plates wear, the pack thickness gets less and you lose a small amount of compression and the clutch slips. If you don't have instructions try googling them. Andy

  3. Forgot to ask, have you cleaned the compression plates ? A very light scrub with nylon pan scourer might also just deglaze the friction material. Andy

  4. thanks @Android853sp I will have a google of the instructions, but thanks for tip of cleaning the compression plates, the clutch was already on the bike when I bought it some 7-8 years ago, so its done a couple of thousand road miles, cant really see the benefits of it, and must admit its quite hard to get a smooth pull away from stand still, so will do a costing exercise on whats best

  5. Sounds like the spider spring has given up the ghost. Pull the pressure plate and take a look. They crack around the base of the fingers

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  6. I have the same slipper on my 996 and have no issues pulling away.

Is the clutch fluid 4 years (or more) old? wont effect slipping but won't help anything.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  7. Clutch fluid all new, could be spring related as springs do weaken, you wouldn't happen to have the instructions would you? Or where you get your spares

I've read a bit on other forums, saying that there are harder and softer springs, and that washers can be put under the springs to make it stiffer,

The weight of the rider can also effect the slipper, if your lite you need weaker springs, like I say might just need a run or try dropping the clutch quickly to see if the slipper comes in.

Will also have a look at this star spring

  8. Check your pack thickness too. Depth from drum to plate

  9. Have also heard about this, I think I need a manual or instructions of anyone has them ?thanks

  10. Don't worry about the springs, check the spider then the pack thickness first.

  11. Sorry mate, was on the bike when I bought it.
