999 Rear Light/indicator Mot Failure ?

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Kingfixer, Mar 23, 2016.

  1. These also were already on the bike when I bought it I never gave it a thought till somebody pointed out these may fail an MOT, its an LED strip with indicators built in. On top of maybe failing they blink quite fast as they are LED I know nothing at all about electrics so is there a resistor or something needed for that ?
That may be immaterial if its going to fail an MOT anyway ?

  2. Hi King,

    I found this:
    • Indicators must be fitted to a motorcycle and emit only orange light
    • They must flash on and off, not just dim and brighten
    • They must flash between 60 and 120 times per minute
    • They must be visible when riding or have a functioning idiot light
    • They must be securely fitted and so must the switch
    • They must not be adversely affected by the operation of another lamp or the horn

I did think think they had to be a certain distance apart. Maybe the last point means that they could be considered too close to the brake light... Also your flash may be too quick!

    Hope it helps!

  3. thanks guys I may take it to my nearest centre to see what they think. They must have been on when the last owner did the mot ? he had it 2 years I think and he said he hadn't done anything to it from when he bought it so it must have passed at some point ?

  4. Doesn't look like you've got a number plate light either, so it may also fail on that.

To be honest, that rear light is also tiny. It may look "cool" but it'll also be difficult for myopic car/van/lorry drivers to spot. The last thing you need is a lorry up your chuff because he didn't see your brake light...

  5. Not sure whether you need a number plate light on a bike, but if there is one fitted it needs to work.

And yes there will be a relay in there somewhere for the led lights, I followed a bike with this type of set up once ,in the dark, and when he indicated to turn his rear light went out!...

  6. guys what I think your missing here is how visible it will be to another road user car/lorry 4x4 bearing down on you.

the rear of a bike is extremely narrow, unlike a car, we have limited visibility from behind, that's why the MOT stations like charging us £2 for a little round stick on reflector, and are encourage to wear bright clothing etc to be seen

must admit it does look very neat all combined, but id rather be seen, than look cool.

    ( my Opinion )

  7. Hmmmm must admit I never gave it a thought till recently but never liked the quick flash, so I have ordered a new rear light unit and a tail tidy.

  8. What did you get? I'm looking too.

  9. LED lights take less current than standard lights therefore you need to wire in a load resistor in series, they only cost a couple of quid. I have strip leds wrapped around the rear fender of my Victory....been on there for 6yrs....never failed mot or been pulled by plod.

  10. I have a purpose built LED light cluster for my 749.

Although I KNOW it is illegal as the amber lights are less than 180mm apart, mine passes the MOT no problems and I have been stopped by the Plod and they haven't picked me up for it, (yet) so I'm willing to take my chances as They (imo) are bright enough and clear enough to be seen from a distance, plus they look smart anyway.
    Guvs.
