1200 DVT Pre Silencer Problems

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by etonrifle, Apr 6, 2016.

  1. Hi, new on here. Bought a new MTS 1200S last November, have had quite a few problems with it, main one is due to faulty valve on the presilencer - causes problems revving past 5000rpm, cut outs at low speed and excessive smoke from the exhaust. The dealer looked at it, resolved it, now problem is reoccuring, and they will replace the pre-silencer. They say the problem is caused by corrosion, but seems a bad design if corrosion is occuring enough to make this valve seize with only 1000 miles on the clock.
Called Ducati Assist to take it to the dealer this time, who use AA, and they failed to show up. Have attempted to contact Ducati UK direct to have words but- no joy, there does not seem to be any numbers available.
Dealer has been helpful, its not their fault the bike is unreliable and the AA didn't show up.
    Any thoughts, comments.....

  2. Welcome,

Unfortunately it seems to be another one of the small ongoing issues with the DVT but a fairly historic design issue with Ducati exhaust valves in general.

Saying that other manufacturers exhaust valves go a similar way but maybe not as quick

You could on the previous multistrada model remove the spring and keep the valve open all the time , I think it's possible on the dvt but I'm sure somebody will confirm shortly.

It will definitely seize regardless though so in my view it's safer to disengage it and leave it open

  3. Or take the plunge, scrap the cat, and fit a termignoni system? Did this with my pre dvt multi and its a Bobby dazzler!

  4. It may not be their fault but it is the dealer you have a contract with and it is they who are responsible, not Ducati UK.

  5. Damodici - thanks I'll ask the dealer about that.
Carr01 - thanks, does that remove the pre Silencer? I've never looked at alternative systems on any bike.

Ask to speak to Bobby she's extremely helpful .

  7. Bike delivered back today with new pre-silencer. According to the dealer this is the 3rd 2015 MTS on which they've had to replace the pre-silencer. I will ride it to work to see how it is, but this sounds like a design that is not fit for purpose.

Other than having words with the dealer and Ducati UK, anyone have any ideas on how to fix it. I have a couple of tours coming up and confidence in the bike is low (but its an amazing bike when working properly).

  8. Use the Contact page on the main Ducati website and message them. I did this with an issue, expecting no response. However I got a call the next morning from Customer Care in Italy.
