I had an interesting conversation with someone who should know.. They said the 1199 was rushed out to help seal the Audi deal and it wasn't quite where Ducati wanted it but they needed a new flagship super bike for the deal to go ahead. I don't think anyone needs a Pani gale for the road. Still they're fucking great aren't they! Sent from my LG-D855 using Tapatalk
For me getting the 899 over the 1199/1299 was nothing to do with money. There really isn't much difference in the cost between secondhand 899's and the 1199 base. The decision was purely based on my skill (or lack of) levels and the normal riding style/roads I use and after doing approx 150 miles on the bike to date I'm really happy with my decision. I've not ridden an 1199/1299 but my last bike was an RC8R which was just way ott for what I was using it for. I probably only ever had the throttle pinned a handful of times in the two years I had it because it scared the shit out of me, and it just seemed like a waste really
In my opinion it depends on the usage of the bike. If you want to go for a cafe ride, maybe the 1299 is better. If you want to get fast laps AND if you are not and EXPERT, you will love the 899 because for getting fast with the 1299 you have to know what you have to do for being fast. Nevertheless the 899 costs less then the 1299 and you have to expect that you will fall of the bike on race track. At least this are the reasons why i have choosen the 899 for race track use only. For road i would go for a 1200 Monster S or something like this.
Perversely, this was one of the main reasons behind me getting my Panigale R - I don't have the skill to master it...but that 'scared shitless' will stop me ever getting bored of it on the handful of times I pin the throttle to the stop.
Interesting that there seems to be quite varied views on this. Also interesting to hear a few have done the smaller brother and moved on to the bigger machines with no mention of them being any less agile in the twisty A and B roads. Like many others, my skill would never be able to warrant the need for and 1199 or 1299 let alone the 'R' however I do like to be different and the exclusivity feel with owning less popular machines Not the right section of the forum I know but I've had my 1198 about 6 weeks now and only seen one other whilst out and about since. Again, I've seen quite a number of 848's and 1098's but just the one 1198... I guess this could be for similar reasons mentioned within this thread too.
Out of interest, does anyone know the total sales for the respective model pans? Whilst appreciate its not necessarily an accurate indication, there are 28 used 1199/1299 on eBay and only 11 899's (no 959 yet).
thing is, you have to have massive balls to ride a 1199, and most men only have small to medium balls. :Watching:
well of you add up the numbers, theres similar numbers of 899 and 1199 registered. most 1199 owners could have more money for extras, as the bike costs quite a bit more to start with. That said, I bet the 899 gets ridden twice as much as the 1199! Ironically, I bet most prefer the 899!
There are far more secondhand 1199s for sale so you may be right. On MCN classifieds there are 27 1199s and only 4 899s. I don't really understand why
I think its because you can jump on an 899 and thrash the nuts of it, while pissing yourself. On a 1199, if you try jumping on and thrashing it, you just shit yourself, when you pass 2000 miles, you have learnt to ride it, and got as nearly as much out of it as a 899 while going 20% faster. The sad thing is, you dont get the noises of the 899 until the 1199 speedo is displaying naughty numbers.
I reckon it also depends what you were riding before too (regardless of skills or lack of)... if you've come from 600 then an 1199 would probably scare the crap out of you whereas if you rode a modern litre bike then you may find an 899 wanting a little bit in the balls out mental stakes...
