Hi Fuel sender discussion seem to be thin on the ground at the moment so I thought I would start one! Ducati ms forum discussed the latest D version in some detail and initial feedback seemed to be Ducati have finally cracked this really complex engineering mystery (ha ha ha ). Whats the view here? Anyone have the latest version on for a few months successfully? Or are you all scared to tempt fate by saying its working, only to have it fail the following week? Mine is out of warranty, although ducati did replace the last one (version C) a couple of months out of warranty as a gesture of good will previously. Not sure they will do that again as the bike is now 3 years old. The yellow light really pisses me off almost as much as having to rely on the odometer and me remembering to zero it every fuel stop. One day I will f**k up and will run out of petrol. (not a nice vibe on an awesome bike) Anyway, I suspect I will have to put my hand in my pocket for a new sender (which I will have to fit myself to save money). What I don't want to do is pay out for a unit that will fail again. Lets us know what you know. Keith
I’m interested in this too. No idea what version sender I have at the moment, is there an easy way to tell???? The bike was bought new in March 2012 and like the OP the original sender was also replaced a few months out of warranty in 2014 . The replacement has been playing up for about the last 6 months – the fuel light comes on at 90 miles and by 100 the gauge display is blinking furiously and imploring me to fill up immediately. Then when I do the gauge gradually creeps up over the next 5 – 10 miles but never shows full! I’ve tried removing the sender and making sure it doesn’t jam or anything to no avail. I always re-set the trip so I’m unlikely to run out. But also like the OP the yellow light, flashing display and knowledge that I should be able to do at least 120 – 130 miles before the light comes on pisses me off far more than it should any rational human being. Oh and my 1979 GS1000S Suzuki has a reliable fuel gauge. I’m also resigned to forking out for a replacement and can fit it myself but won’t bother if the latest version hasn’t cured the problems. I also seem to remember reading somewhere that one of the updated versions required a software update because the direction of reading is inverted? Any insight appreciated.
http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/fuel-indicator-not-working-properly.35737/ May I suggest reading this thread? There is some relevant information in various posts.
Thanks for the link Pete. Unfortunately despite trawling through 3 pages of the thread it's still not clear if version D has actually solved the problem or not?
A few months ago I replaced a part number 592.1.021.2C with a part number 592.1.021.1D (Is that what you mean by version D?). It is working pretty well so far. I can't speak for anyone else, obviously.
Just had my third one two weeks ago....lasted two fill ups. After 35-40 miles drops from full to half way. They are useless things.
This is really miserable news. How f**king difficult is it to get it right after 4 attempts. I don't care how difficult the geometry is inside the tank and what goes in petrol nowadays it's not rockets science. like pl2112 above it disproportionally knarks me off. Having the light permanently on and the fact I have to reset the trip every time AND having to refill at 110-120 just in case is just annoying. I was really looking forward to getting a D version and having a functioning fuel, guage. It's a fantastic bike but this really pi**es me off. Rang over just getting it off my chest. Grumpy mcgrumpface.
Really? Tell us the full Ducati part number then. It's printed on the white label, which is tagged onto the electric cable to the sender - you can see it when the seat is off. A few months ago 592.1.021.2C was superseded by part number 592.1.021.1D. If you have got 592.1.021.1E or .2E then you must be the first.
I have 592.1.021.1D , replaced by Ducati out of warranty, although I did pay the labour. So it is nice to know that it wasn't some old stock Ducati had lying around But if there is an E version one has to ask the question what is wrong with D .
My recently acquired 2010 1200ST came with a Brand new in the box sender unit (D version). Not ridden the bike yet to see how bad the situation is but assuming I do need to fit the part am I correct in thinking that the software has to be updated for the installation to work correctly?
If I remember rightly, software has to be updated to convert from B to C, but not needed to convert from C to D. @nelly would know for sure.
Yes. pete is correct.. there is a SW update needed on the earlier bikes when going to the C part. C to D is a straight swap
