Some Low Life Broke My Steering Lock (central London)

Discussion in 'Hypermotard' started by pisquano, Apr 27, 2016.

  1. I can only assume it was someone actually trying to steal the bike vs pure vandalism. please see the photo. the guy(s) essentially wiggled the steering left and right and peeled off part of the metal up to the point that you could actually move it around.
obviously I had an alarmed disc lock.
but I wonder how they could think to get away with it?
please note all this happened in W1 - Soho - central london, in a road where quite a few people walk by.

do you guys know what sort of cost there is to have it repaired?
is it even worth repairing given it's clearly not a very good deterrent? the lock still work but only if I put it on Park mode (which leaves the lights on)

  2. Not sure how much it will cost for a new locking casing , but do you leave it in this place often ?
You need to mind they don't come back for another go at it

  4. There is a video currently doing the rounds of a Panigale being stolen by some scumbags in i think London. Their method of 'removing' the steering lock is just to kick the forks left and right after they have angle grinded the disc lock off.

  5. unbelievable. the police told me they had quite a few bikes stolen in that street.
the don't seem to have tampered with the disc lock or with the ignition (where the key goes).

do you guy think the bike is safe to ride? I might pop @ ducati metropolis so they can also give me a quote.
my insurance covers this but I still don't know if it's worth repairing to be honest

  6. I am a londoner, and I am as surprised as you. it seems they were amateurs, and they didn't even see the disc lock (it's grey) until they broke the steering lock, at which point they must have left.
what amazes me is how all this happens in daylight in a street in soho, 5 meters from a busy Pret a manger
if I saw these scums going for a bike I would go and at least shout them away

  7. id check with your insurance company if i were you mate, you know what they're like any excuse to invalidate your claim, not sure they'd be too happy insuring a desirable bike like yours with no steering lock

  8. If I had to commute in to London on 2 wheels I'd buy the shitest looking turd I could buy and just use that. Saving the posh bike for more enjoyable jaunts

  9. good point.... still it adds NOTHING in terms of security of the bike, and after what happened I will never use it again. I always use an alarmed disc lock anyway
mmm not an option. I cannot have 2 parking permits where I live, for example

  10. i know but from experience the first thing they ask you (should the worst happen) is was the steering lock on/alarm set (and do you have both sets of keys), its a ballache i know but better safe than sorry

fwiw when i first passed my test i had a yamaha diversion that some little rat tried to rob off my drive, he stuck a screwdriver down the ignition barrel and it cost me 1600 quid for a new one as it was linked to the ecu so you could be a lot worse off financially ;)

  15. This. Not the best use of English maybe.

  16. Not a nice thing to happen. Hope you sorted out soon.

  17. Makes me sick to the pit of my stomach watching stuff like that. Not just the thieves but the people who walked past and didn't say/do anything.

  18. You never heard it a "twocer?"

  19. I couldn't just walk past and I'm an old twat on a walking stick! Mind you I've heard about Poole walking past a scumbag trying to rape a woman on London Underground!

  20. i understand some people might be a bit too wary of approaching them but its obvious to everyone bar the brainless what they were up to and a quick call to the local plod shop is hardly going to inconvenience them, certainly not as much as the poor bastard who had his pride and joy stolen but those gutter rats
