Potential Safety Issue With 1098s

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by KevK, Apr 20, 2016.

  1. Some members may already be aware that there was a recall on some 1098S bikes as there is a risk that the right hand fork bottom end may fail due to cracking of the fork wheel shaft clamp, around the pinch bolts which secure the right hand fork to the axle (see http://www.dft.gov.uk/ for details). The Department of Transport lists the range of frame numbers for those bikes believed to be affected.

However, I have identified a crack in the right hand fork wheel shaft clamp on my bike (see picture) but the frame number for my bike is not included in the range identified as requiring a recall. I have contacted Ducati to make them aware and they have asked that I take my bike to my local dealer for further investigation, which I am doing tomorrow.

Will update this thread once I know more but in the meantime, if you own a 1098S, please have a quick look before you go out on your next ride, it will only take 10 seconds and may save you from a very unfortunate accident.

  2. Thanks for that, I'll check mine tonight. The consequences of its failure are unimaginable!

  4. Apologies for no update recently but since I dropped the bike off at my local dealer last week, there hasn't been much to report until today.

Following discussions with Ducati UK, it seems impossible to definitively say whether the crack was caused by a manufacturing defect or by overtightening of the pinch bolts. However Ducati have kindly offered to replace the fork leg clamp free of charge as a goodwill gesture - Many thanks Ducati UK :grinning:

So I would still advise people to keep an eye out for this while also making sure that whenever the front wheel is removed/replaced on the bike, who ever is carrying out the work, is aware of the torque settings and confirms that they have applied these when securing the wheel to the bike.

Hopefully mine was a one off incident.

And thanks again Ducati UK :grinning::grinning::grinning:

  5. Thanks for pointing this out Kevk. Mine isn't in the range of affected bikes either, but i most certainly will be giving the fork clamp a visual inspection before i go out on a ride in future.
