748 Help Please!

  1. Hi....am new to this forum, so please excuse me for too much too soon but...had my 748 4 years after an ss900. Last October decided to take heads off to check valve clearances/ followers etc as bike passed 18000m, even though it had behaved impeccably for 3 years. Spent some time thoroughly dismantling and rebuilding heads with new followers/ shims etc till perfect. Rebuilt engine alongside extensive work/ money on rear end/ bolt ons etc. Fired up for first time on Friday. No oil pressure. Checked oil pressure switch with compair/ meter and checked flow from hole, but nothing. Noticed that if anything, there seemed to be vaccuum rather than pressure. Read up on all the forums and came up with no prime on oil pump as had been drained of oil for many months (new good oil/filter). Took right side cover off and checked pump/ HP bypass etc and all good. Primed and replaced. Fired up and oil came out of pressure switch hole so replaced switch and check operation. Soon, LH exhaust started smoking, then water coming out of exhaust pipe junctions.
Took top ends apart again, checking everything, but couldnt find fault. All gaskets in right place. Cleaned everything and rebuilt using gasket cement on base AND head gaskets putting cement between 2 leaves of gasket as well as either side. Rebuilt, tourquing exactly as in manual.
Fired up again this morning and no oil pressure. Checked oil pump again, and all seems fine but no pressure at banjo for horizontal. Tried priming down pressure switch hole till oil coming out a bit. Fired up, and after a few seconds.......wet exhaust left side (sitting on bike). Am now totally disillusioned with my pride and joy and have no idea as what to try next. Worried as to damage due to lack of oil too.
Any ideas/ help would be extremely gratefully accepted. Thanks, Ben.

  2. Not sure why you needed the heads off to check the valves & rockers? Are you sure the head gaskets are in the correct way round?

  3. Removed heads to clean combustion chambers/ pistons/ valves/ and lapped all 8. Very carefull as to gasket positions as to every specific parts place in each head.

  4. OK, was just a thought as I have heard of people fitting the head gaskets the wrong way round which blocks the oil return holes, meaning the oil just pumps up to the head until something gives. Don't know if it might also cause a water leak though?
