Right I may get some abuse for this but here goes! I am using my sf848 for everything and that includes alot of commuting in heavy traffic around town. The trouble I am having is in the lower rev range (below 4000rpm) and deciding which gear to be in. I seem to be spending an awful lot of my time in first gear and if I try and change up to second the bike feels like it is going to stall. Having come from a jap four do I have to adjust my riding and use first gear more and not worry to much about changing up? On my old bike first gear was really just for pulling off but I feel on this bike I should just keep the bike in first for longer if that makes sense? I am also having quite major surging issues on a steady throttle at these revs but am hoping this will sort itself out? Any advise would be great as I feel like a bit of a numpty at the moment!
Seems common across all Ducati's at low speed, what I've done previously is drop the front sprocket by 1 tooth, or go up 2-3 on the back this has the effect of moving the rev to speed ratio so it becomes much more compliant around town.
Definitely go 2-3 up at the back. The ride in town is transformed and there are other benefits too. Downside is a slight loss of top-end speed that you almost never see anyway.
Thanks for the advise guys much appreciated. I think I will run it a bit longer and then maybe see how I go. It could be I am just thinking about it too much and should just ride it like it wants to be ridden....faster!! Cheers
Yep, 14t front sprocket for less than £20 and 30mins work in the garage should sort that out. worse case is you dont like it and swap back, you lose £20 that's all. loads of SF riders swap out to a 14T, check the us site, it's almost the done thing on most SF & Hypers but its also pretty cheap just to suck it and see. the 848sf I rode was brilliant in 3rd gear and it just wanted to be revved, if I held 3rd I could wind on easily from 40mph - 100mph (on a track officer,,,,honestly) and it had no problem moving anywhere in between, it really needed to be on to 4th to be fair but you lose some pull. the point with that is that dropping a tooth won't hurt your top speed, it'll just bring the usable revs closer to you if you like, so 1st will be a quick short shift and then 2nd will actually be usable at 30mph and so on. If you end up liking it thats when you slash out on the bigger rear as you can get a nice blingy sprocket but just for starters I'd drop a 14t on there straight away.
changed to a 14 tooth on my Monster hadnt really considered on the SF, hummm maybe when I fit the Ti saver/clutch slave got exhausts ceramic coated/had it re mapped Geeze going to be a busy winter -
Hi mate Just ordered one of these to lighten the clutch up a bit. Ducati Clutch Slave Cylinders I seem to be spending alot of time looking at mods for this bike! I suppose it's all part of the fun! Cheers
yeah Oberon only ones I can find where you don't have to remove the pin - will order on pay day - clutch ok tbh but standard one looks yak
Oberon Clutch slave turned up today that's bloody good service as I only ordered it yesterday! Also recieved the Oberon tax disc holder (cylinder type) as the one that came on the bike is a cheap plastic one that let's in water and doesn't keep the disc rotated correctly. I must say both look to be excellent quality and looking forward to fitting them now!
Have ordered a 14 tooth sprocket so will be trying that also as i drive in traffic a lot and second gear sometimes is too high.
Char :smile:You are joking right? The main reason for getting the Oberon one is because the plastic one let water in! Cheers for the tip though!
Well i thought the bike had enough character until i fitted the 14 tooth sprocket !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW it feels like a rocket now, acceleration is mental!!!!!!!!!!!! Second gear is manic, third is even more manic, i have never had my shift lights flicker so much, even with the cold weather and slightly greasy roads the power delivery is much smoother and the engine feels happier rather than it labouring. Overtaking seems instantaneous like being shot from a cannon. Three figure speeds come up in no time. Overall i am very happy with this cheap modification costing only £25 including postage and it is a genuine Renthall steel version.
Mine tops out at 154mph with the 14 toother. Any idea what yours will do? I was just wondering what the difference would be between the 1098 and 848.
Forgive my stupidity with this question as I am new, but does the gearing change alter the speedo ? Do you need a speedo healer to adjust ?
