Newly acquired 1000ss

  1. I have a newly acquired 1000ss with a pipercross air filter and GPR pipes. I would value some advice. It runs beautifully above 4000 revs, but is rough and snatchy below. I realise that the more open pipes could be causing weak mixture. Would a power commander be a benefit. Or would lowering the gearing (currently 15/38) be a benefit. Perhaps my expectations are too high. My other bike is a BMW R1200S which has tons of torque and is smooth from 2000 revs. Also my Duke has the standard clutch cover. Is there any real benefit in having an open cover apart from the look. And after market clutch slave cylinders are often recommended, what would you recommend.

  2. Howdo Chris!

Yep a PCIII will sort your fueling (Or a ECU re-map), torque wise you should have a heafty chunk with a 1000DS (65lbish).

Oberon are good for clutch slaves (There's loads on the market, 2nd hand on flea bay??) makes a big difference IMHO.

As for the clutch cover it's purely for looks (But Ducati's are all about the looks ) some might say it keeps the clutch cooler/less dust build up - but the full cover then prevents the springs and basket from the dreaded rust (Which can be negated with stainless springs n stuff). I would recommend cleaning out the clutch every now and then.

    Cheers Pablo

  3. Check when the fuel filter was last changed, often overlooked, especially if the bike has been doing a low annual mileage

  4. We could clarify if this is mechanical engine chugging before doing anything. Mine chugs and clatters up to 5000 rpm and there is nothing a remap would do to remove that. And my bike has been remapped by CSJ in Bristol.

Gearing the bike lower might get you out of the rev range quicker, but that's it, I reckon

I have the Avanti clutch slave. I reckon it lightens the level feel by about 30%. Much cheaper than Oberon. Avanti.JPG

  5. Changing the gearing will only mask fuelling issues, you need to sort the low down problem first. Drop the front from 15 teeth to 14 for better acceleration.

The clutch slaves were better on the later bikes but I have 2 x Oberons, may sell one if you are interested?

Others have failed to mention that an open cover means more clutch noise, you either like it like me or hate it.

  6. I would recommend changing out the fuel filter and while you're in the tank...... Check the back end/scavenge area for crap, rust and plain old water - it collects there particularly if it's left less than half full.
Condensation collects there - I have seen this in a 3000 mile late registered bike that must have spent the first 5 years of it life in a hot/cold showroom - tank inside needed coating it was so rough. Dodgy fuel filters can manifest in too many ways to count - won't run flat out, struggles at low revs or missing on one cylinder......plus they're only £20
