Instrument Cluster Faulty

Discussion in 'Hypermotard' started by Turtleossie, Jun 17, 2016.

  1. Hello all, new to this forum, firstly apologies for wading straight in with questions, but I was hoping you guys can help..

Over winter I had condensation form in the rear of my 2011 Hypermotard 1100 speedo, it disappeared over time but recently during rides the cluster has started to freeze, normally it's the speed that shows crazy numbers, or nonsense, then freezes/updates very slowly, digits missing etc, eventually I lose the whole display. Next ride it's all back working fine, then after about 50 miles it all starts again. Particularly bad if I gun the bike...

I'm an electrical engineer so thought I'd open the unit up, there's nothing obvious other than the very flakey looking ribbon cable going to the LCD display, I've reseated this and the display, thoroughly dried everything out, things are a littler better, but still not right.

So given a new cluster is >£600, a few questions before I go bankrupt myself on something that may/not be the solution.

Has anyone else had this issue and solved it?

If I buy a new/second hand cluster are they plug and play, or do they need learning to the key/CDI?

I don't suppose anyone has a speedo I could borrow to prove the issue..

If a new speedo does need learning, does anyone know how to do it?

    Many thanks,
    S

  2. i remember a condensation problem on my old 848 from new. i opened up the cluster and fitted a dessicant sachet from packaging. it cured the problem. sorry but i doubt this will help you now though

  3. Thanks, but I've spent weeks taking it on and off, drying, re soldering stuff... Nothing works so far :)

  4. I did see one on ebay for 200 last month....which has gone although Ive just found this...I believe the streetfighter clock is the same...

The other question was (if youre a bit handy) is, have you tried to rebuild the ribbon cable with something else? ie you've resoldered it but what ive the cable itself is breaking down....new wire...?

  5. Interesting, I was wondering if you can buy separates and here's the answer.

The ribbon cable running to the LCD screen is moulded into the assembly so no way of changing, not even sure it's that breaking down anyway, it could just be the tiny microscopic, fiddly plug it goes into which is on the PCB located into the back of the LCD.

It's clearly a connection issue, I went for a ride yesterday and within two miles the screen was playing up, so I pressed down while I was riding along, it came back on, then went off again, so I pressed it a bit harder, and it was back, and was fine for 100 miles of hooning.... Go figure.

Could be the PCB, the LCD, could even (although unlikely I think) the cable going to the speedo itself, from the bikes loom.

I'm loathed to pay out 600 for something so intermittent, I'll have another look inside this week and what else I can resolved/clean etc

Previous in my life as an engineer issues like this are to do with the ribbon connector, maybe I can work some magic there, will let you know.

Problem is every time I try something I have to go got a hundred mile ride to test it, sucks to be me

  6. Yeah... Hard life isn't it..! :)

What about there the plug goes into the back of the clocks.... Next time it's apart put some pics up... I've seen a set apart...

  8. What about the main plug? Have you retinned that?

  9. Yep, on the solder side of the PCB I had a good poke around with a soldering iron.

I'm going to have another look this week, see if I can replicate the fault with the bike up on a stand in the garage, problem with these faults.... Hard to replicate on a bench.

    I'll get more pictures when I re-operate.

It's a poor connection somewhere, either through cables/plugs, or grounding, I'll find it one day. I don't give up that easy.

Having to fork out 600 quid for a new one is a good driving force to fix it myself!

  10. Ribbon cables are awful. Sometimes they could do with a tiny trim off the top and it cures it. Just don't cut too much that you lose the connectors at the tip.

If it is fine when pressed down, it definitely sounds like a loose connection so it should definitely be curable.

  11. Fault is in the LCD display, I've had the whole thing apart, when you press on the area of the LCD display that the ribbon cable enters into the display the screen goes on and off.

Tested with the whole thing split apart so nothing else effecting.

The LCD is a moulded unit, so not much further to go with the fault finding, either live with it in the hope it improves or a new LCD, better than buying the whole thing I guess

  12. Well there is that LCD that I found...

  13. Yip, probably worth a cheeky offer

  14. Well a complete set is about 400 and thats the only one I've seen...

  15. Deed is done, new speedo fitted. Ended up costing me £580 plus £50 fitting costs. Result in two years warranty and a bike that reads zero miles once more.

So turns out mileage is held in the speedo, as is the immobiliser data, new keys had to be re learnt to the new unit before it would start.

Not happy, due to being skint, but ready to roll once again

Guess I still also have the old unit, which I could sell on for spare parts, only the is lcd bust...

  16. Might be on the lookout for some busted clocks (i want the main plug) for an experiment... But i may not try it yet... Depends on funds and I'm committed to a slipper clutch at the end of the month and velocity stacks on the way from Philadelphia...

  17. Hi,
I'm where you where, same kind of fault in my screen. so I'm trying to open the housing so I can see what model of screen I would need.
Do you have any advise on how to open it? I see from the pictures that there are what looks like 6 clips, but no way how to get to them without destroying it.
