My DVT has 5,500miles on it and has developed a strange clattery rattle from the left side of the engine. It only happens on gentle acceleration at about 2-3000rpm and the best way to describe it is like hitting an empty tin can with a wooden spoon. Weird I know, but that's how it sounds to me. It seems to be coming from the front left, around the ugly spam container shaped thing that has something to do with emissions. Its just had its 12 months service and I've been told it's all fine. I'm not entirely convinced. Anyone else had anything like this?
I have no idea but for the sake of clarity, can you hear the individual strikes of the can with the spoon??
Yes, you can hear the individual strikes, they are in time with the beat of the engine. Resulting in a rattle.
It's not the chain slapping against the top of the swingarm is it? I know you say you think it's coming from the front but... Does it only happen when you are on the move, or does it also happen when the bike is stationary and in neutral. If nothing happens when stationary, it is probably driveline related. Try adjusting the chain first and see if it makes a difference.
Interesting thought, and I do only get it when I'm on the move, but it's not real that kind of noise; it's a hollow kind of sound. Chain is OK as it's just back from a service.
I think the simplest solution is to take it back to the dealer and explain politely, but firmly, that the noise definitely wasn't there before the service. If you can hear it every time you ride it then the dealer will too.
Is the noise only there when pulling away in 1st, 2nd , 3rd at an easy steadily increasing throttle? Sounds like a metallic ticking? Does it go away if the clutch is pulled in? I know it isn't tyres or chain so what is it?
I think i may have same problem. Just after my 9000 service and on a road trip, i notice a similar sound when moving at slow speed in 1st it stops if you pull the clutch and coast. When clutch driving the rear wheel the noise is almost rythmic in interval. I thought it was the chain hitting something at first but it would still do that with the clutch lever pulled. Going to my dealer on return next week.
Its intermittent and only lasts for a short period as you gently apply the gas. Once the revs pick up it stops. Haven't tried pulling the clutch in.
Let me know how you get on. I'm going to take mine back for the fuel sender recall and will get them to have another look at the same time.
Hi dave i exactly have the same issue And can totally understand what you are meaning with the tin noise Want to know did your dealer find a solution for it
Hi, after several visits where the dealer couldn't hear the rattle (it is intermittent so I wasn't that surprised) I had the UK warranty guy ride mine and was so happy that it made the rattle when he rode it. As a result they had a look at the exhaust and found a couple of the welds were loose where'd the front pipe joins the cat/silencer box. They replaced the cat under warranty which was great news, or would have been if it had stopped the rattle, which it didn't! I took it back and they had it for a couple of weeks and didn't hear the rattle again. I've now got it back and it's still doing it, intermittently. It's all logged with Ducati and if anything develops they have said they will cover it under the warranty(now just over 2 years old). So it seems I've just got to live with it which isn't ideal. It's a shame because the bike is so excellent in so many ways. I got so fed up with it that I seriously considered a change and took a BMW S1000R for a test ride, but it just wasn't as good and I also got a stupid p/ex offer so will stick with the Multi. Let me know if you find a solution!
Does sound like chain slap. I get it when at low revs (too low really) on the KTM. It's a known thing on my range and not a problem, just a noise. When you hear it, slip the clutch and see if that stops it. Change of gearing can solve it as it changes the angle of the chain. Alternatively, don't let the engine revs get that low without clutch.
I'm 100 percent it's chain slap as everyone's mentioned ! Mines always done it, it's just when you get on the gas, usually a low speed 2nd gear left turn for me. It's a rider issue more than a bike problem. Ps I tend to run a bit of slack as I'm always 2 up. Go and flap your chain up n down on the swing arm quite hard and you'll see I deal with it by rolling off the gas asap and feeding it in gentler.
