748 Factory Type Swingarm Question

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Estranged, Jul 30, 2016.

  1. Has anyone here got the "extended/factory racing" swingarm fitted to their road bike?

I keep looking at the moto46 swingarm mod as the 916 style bikes look too "stubby" with the standard swingarms.

I'm never going to use the bike to notice the difference between the two, was just wondering what the new chain length would be and if any tweaks would be needed?

  2. You have to re valve the rear shock as well I belive and change the top shock rocker. Plus trying to find a longer chain guard to fit, plus longer chain rubs, there like rocking horse poo. Chain not a problem really.

  3. Pretty certain it's Harris that carryout the mod. I suspect it's not really worth the investment unless you're racing/serious tackday hoe. If you're trying to replicate the geometry of the 90's racing bikes to properly benefit the whole package would be off set yokes to match and probably the other parts cookster mentioned.

  4. @cookster I didn't think any mods to the rear shock. That a big job do you know?
Was hoping a longer chain might just be a general random order based on needed length?
Was also hoping to somehow bodge a standard chain rub. (That idea works, in my head at least. Oh dear...)
Did think about the the top rocker. Again, any idea why that's different on the extended swingarms?

@Nelson Thanks for the possible Harris link. All it says on the moto46 site is that they're made for them by the company that made 'em back in the day.
I'm not after the geometry of the race bikes, as I wouldn't notice/benefit from the difference. It's a cosmetic thing. The road bikes just look "wrong" compared to the racing ones.

  5. There made by Harris however the jig/patterns etc are owned by moto46...Chris is a good chap and will happily talk you through the process.

  6. @Tommy B Cool.
Will try and get in touch with both and see what they say.

Main thing, (I think I said. Probably not) is how much/if at all it would rear shock setup?
I'm probably not good enough with the riding thing to notice the difference between stock and modded swingarm. Just as long as it's not a massive difference and/or other mods HAVE to be done too.
