Car Question

  1. Hey
Have a focus just coming up to 3 years old and had its 1st MOT today @28k mls not at a Ford dealers.

Been told the front brake discs are "lipped" and nearside is corroded and both will need replacing with the brake pads in another 5k mls.

Seems outrageous to me car brake discs wearing out in 30(ish) k mls.

    Any thoughts on this?

  2. Yeah - it's an easy earner and a favourite with mot stations especially one that starts with a "K"! All discs eventually become lipped - the point is does it effect the brake performance? Probably not????

  3. I had this on my car. Just under 30k and there was a judder coming through the steering wheel under braking. The garage said it was corrosion around the edge of the disc. I had new discs and pads on the front, which was expensive.
I'm not sure if this was necessary or not.
I don't know if you've ever seen the tv show on Discovery called Wheeler Dealers. They once used a machine which re-faces the disc. This would remove the lip and any corrosion. I presume my garage didn't have this machine but I could have saved some money doing this instead. As long as the disc has enough "meat" left this may be an option. Ask around.

  4. Obviously if you have new discs fitted you have to have new pads so they can bed in together - this way they can get you on the parts profit twice plus the labour! I can almost bet they will fit factors discs which come in 3 grades - total shit, less shit and better but still shit! Same with the pads? None of which will be anything like the quality of manufacturers original equipment and will probably squeal and squeak after 500 miles and do your nut in???

  5. Was an ex-Ford dealers who have stopped selling new cars and just do servicing now.

Surely 30k can't be right for front car discs????

  6. Well, they said they need replacing in 5k mls and passed its MOT, they were just advisory.

Not happy. May have to join the Ford forum!

  7. Really depends how you drive and if you are round town stop/start driving. Its like a pair of leather shoes? Some people get years out of them and others who walk differently or on rough surfaces mallee them in 12 weeks

  8. Don't forget the Ministry raise an eyEbrow when an mot test centre keeps giving out clean sheet mot passes with no advises! That's why you get "slight surface corrosion to exhaust system, slight play in suspension bushes, light oil misting on shock absorbers" etc and all the other bollox- remember it's down to the individual testers opinion

  9. 80% of the braking is carried out by the front discs on your front wheel drive car. Since the (quite rightly) discontinuation of using asbestos in brake pads, the pads are a lot more abrasive which wears out the discs quicker. In my experience you are bloody lucky to make them last nearly 30k. At least being a Ford they are easy to change and a fraction of the price of BMW/Mercedes/Audi/VW. Andy

  10. Oh yes, no stainless steel in your discs like JIL4s, just good old fashioned untreated steel or cast iron if your lucky, both of which rust if you sneeze on them. Andy

  11. Wear very much depends how hard you are on the brakes. The lip can be skimmed off using a lathe. The process is known as facing. If you have access to a lathe its easy but the cost of a pair of discs probably outweighs the hassle of having the lip skimmed off. I've never much worried about the lip. I'd be more bothered about how much meat is left on the disc, this can be measured with a pair of vernier calipers.
To be fair the quality of brakes and tyres are pretty important..

Outer rust would come off with a file. Remove the wheel and spin the disc with the file pressed against the edge. It will spin like the chuck of a lathe but would need two pairs of hands.

Buy an Italian car - end of all your problems

    3.2 litre V6 open top

    you know it makes sense

economy shade under 30 to the gallon

and they tend to appreciate in value rather than depreciate

but they are Italian and they tend to have issues

  15. build quality better than VW group as well

almost bought one myself a few years ago but found a stunning alfa for better money, now on my 3rd alfa and the reliability is far better than anything made in france

  16. back to the opening question

e bay pick up a new set of discs and pads for around £50

why are car brake parts a fraction of the price of bike parts

  17. Ok, thx guys, 30k is acceptable. I mainly drive around town with 150mls round trip on m25/m3 around once a month. Probably on the brakes gently quite a lot

    Still seems shit mind.

Guess I'll shut up #ing all over Twitter [emoji10]

  18. Eurocarparts set of discs and pads is around 60 quid.... Do it yourself in an hour or get a local indy to do it for you. Cheaper than using the dealer.

  19. 30k miles isn't that bad, but if the focus is driven like miss daisy it isn't great either. Used to replace them around 20k miles on some of my faster cars, but they would start overheating/fading sooner as they wore out, so you could feel they needed replacing.

You can obviously only skim discs if the wear is under a certain amount (you would have to measure), and to be honest it is probably more expensive and difficult than just changing the discs and pads on a focus. It is a really really easy job to do yourself.

  20. Just done them on my 24000 mile 2012 Focus. For the very same reason. Cost me £58 to do using Brembo pads and comline discs. Measure your discs as the focus uses two sizes.
