Hi all, I hadn't ridden my multi for almost a year (work/getting married/changing jobs it goes on......) Gave her a good wash yesterday and had her MOT'd. Went out today and had her cut out on me a few times. Only happened at high rpm and wide throttle positions, would cut out then burst back to life, happened 7-8 times on ride out to friends and 3-4 on way home, but last time it did it, she didn't restart. I coasted to a halt, switched ignition off, back on and she started as well as ever! Kept pace steady and it didn't happen again!! It was as if it was fuel starvation-is there a fuel filter on these bikes? Anyone had a similar experience and have any advice? Thanks in advance.
I wouldn't have thought so, too inconsistent to be that. I only had 1/4 tank so filled up with a fresh tank at start of ride.
Side stand switch has been known to cause problems. Get it doing it again, then loop out with a paper clip. Check exhaust valve, but more likely to cause lack of power rather than cut out.
Cheers guys, I have the Leo Vince De-cat so that's defo not involved unless it's using some sort of Voodoo from the back of the garage! I read some older posts about side stand switch last night.....disconnected it this morning and looked at plug, it still looks like brand new. The microswitch seems to move smoothly-but being sealed you can't see much. 4hrs riding today and she didn't miss a beat. I went out prepared with a couple of paper clips too!
I discovered the results of a loose battery terminal this weekend. I was at Scottish Ducati Club event at Fort William and the bike ran with no problems but I had noticed that the dash backlight was flickering a bit more than normal. It has always tended to flicker very slightly at idle speeds. On the way home the round dash window kept changing back to display the riding mode, it's default which it does if you cancel the indicators without enabling them firs, but I hadn't been using the indicators for miles. This was happening more and more frequently as the miles went in. Then I noticed that the engine management light flicking on momentarily at the same time. As I got further down the road the light was staying on long enough sometimes to also display the error "BATTERY". So there was something wrong with the battery voltage; too high? too low? faulty battery? faulty regulator? Given the intermittent nature with the light irregularly flicking on/off I reckoned it must be a loose battery connection. I stopped and lifted the seat and found the positive leads were really loose. Yet the bike had been starting with no difficulties. I tightened the screw and checked the earth terminal for good measure. All sorted. And although the connection must have been making and breaking, sometimes for about a second, at no time did the engine cut out or even misfire.
