Looking for a set of OEM exhaust cans off a carby 900SS if anyones got a set they want to sell? May be interested in aftermarket cans if they're road legal or cored OEM cans. Think I've seen a thread stating that the ie exhaust cans won't fit, anyone know if that's correct or whether a whole ie exhaust system would fit?
IE aftermarket ones can be made to fit.............My carbed '97 750SS has '02 750 IE Laser cans with fixed link pipes fitted.......
Im not sure as I havent, perhaps just making different brackets? The link part is longer on the ie cans
That would suggest that the headers are shorter, wonder why Ducati made that change. I'll have to look into this more as there seems to be more ie exhausts around on ebay.
The aftermarket cans and link pipes on my carby came off an IE, but the cans don't have fixed mounting points, that might be the sticking point.
I have a pair off a 93 900, swapped them to Scorpion stainless about 6-7 years ago, if I recall correctly the reason I changed was one of the baffles was gone, pm if interested. Mike
Here's what I did with mine......... The all red versions is how I got the bike...... Note the cans are black painted (which underneath was red, which had been painted on top of the ally cans)....... See how they are supported..........on gold painted Bat-Strap. Outlet end caps point into each other. Swingarm hits the link pipes and cans. The red/white/black version is as it is now.......although the cans have been changed for carbon. Purpose made hangers in 4mm stainless steel.
The headers are almost identical but the main difference is at the point where the two curved sections leave the collector box. To give the IE better ground clearance Ducati altered the angle and position of these tubes. It's a small difference but makes it a bit more complex when trying to interchange exhausts. Hope this helps.
You can actually see what Gillan means in the red/white/black version of my bike........ Look at the angle of the cans compared to the seat fairing underside line..........they aren't parallel......... ....to get them parallel, the fixed link pipes and the cans needed to be rotated inwards.........but that meant the swingarm actually hit both cans and link pipes....... They were really bad when I got the bike, so it took quite a bit of fiddling with plywood and card template hangers before I got them properly sorted.
No bending of the link pipes......It was a case of getting the hangers designed so they would fit the original can mounting bolt holes when the whole pipe and can was swung away from the swingarm.........as it is I have managed to keep them so they are quite 'tight' into the bike...... .......I could have made it a lot easier (and cheaper) if I had used a strap hanger fixing insted..........but as I don't like them because I think they are too flimsy, I opted for doing my own hangers.
The hanger arrangement you came up with looks a lot better than a strap hanger it looks like an OEM hanger.
The issue I had with the hangers is that the IE Laser mounting points in the can (two bolt holes) seemed to be further back than the OEM type hangers, so it wasn't only the sideways angles I had to deal with but also rake back angles. I originally designed the hangers with the idea of using 3mm stainless steel; but having done all the CAD drawings once I was satisfied they were right (another pair of templates made from 3mm cardboard) when I got to programme the CNC laser cutting machine, I decided to change to 4mm stainless purely for strength.......having made the damn things, they wouldn't fit properly because that extra 1mm threw the side angles out. Note the smaller part of the hanger that bolts to the can?........You try bending 4mm stainless when it is only 60mm x 85mm max dimensions.......... It had to go in a very large vice clamped so the kink in the bracket was tight against the vice jaws...........then I laid a piece of flat steeel against the protruding bit of the bracket and then followed up with two clumps with a sledge hammer....... .....that sorted the angle out...... The hangers are actually three parts in each..........there is the main hanger and the smaller mounting bracket. On the back of the main hanger there is a threaded boss welded on. In the smaller mounting bracket a large rubber (oil and grease proof) grommet, into which a turned top hat bush is inserted..........the fixing bolt passes through the bush and into the thread of the main hanger, so the whole lot is 'vibration proof' with the intention of it not cracking.
I have a set of ie stock cans in the loft. They looked mint when I put them up there. I can get the part number off them if you want to cross reference them with other bikes. They are going to be for sale when I get off my backside and start pulling stuff from the loft
Curiosity got the better of me so I went to look. It would seem that the early 900&750 ie used different cans to the later 620,800 and 1000. No idea what the difference is apart from 1B at the end of the part number on the later ones and 1A on the early ones. Edit: So I went out to look at my bike and it has cans ending in 2A which are supposed to be on a '02 750/900 but fit my '00 bike ok. I wonder what the difference was, maybe more baffles to meet noise regs? None of this help with fitting to carby though, sorry
Sorry for jumping in on this ere thread - have acquired a set of hi level cans n brackets for the old girl via a well known on line auction website. Chap I got them from bought them for his SL but they didnt fit, guess what they dont fit my SS either....theyre too nice to give up on without a fight (Bos ones by the look of them), the angle of the link pipe pushes the can up too high for the bracket. Anyone have any useful suggestions short of selling them on?? Now if only I had a set of 50mm pipe benders in the garage.... Ta, Steve
Maybe worth a chat with Alldens Exhausts - I've always found them very helpful, and they must be fairly local to you. Sent from my P01M using Tapatalk
