939 SP Rear Preload For Passenger

  1. Don't worry - it's not a stupid "how long is a piece of string?" question!

The 7mm of thread showing on the rear shock seems to work well for me (c.87kg + kit), although I have to confess I haven't completed a quantitative sag test, which I know I should. I'll reserve that for the winter months, when i want to be in the Man Cave, I think!

My question is to anyone who's adjusted the rear of the 939SP for a passenger (c.60kg + kit). The manual is about as helpful as a chocolate teapot:

If you intend to transport a passenger and baggage, preload the shock absorber spring to the maximum to improve the dynamic performance of the motorcycle and to avoid possible interference with ground. You may find that rebound damping needs adjusting as well. The shock absorber is adjusted by electric impulses sent by the instrument panel to the adjusters inside the shock absorber body.

Don't they have technical proof-readers in Italy??? Maximum preload? Would love to feel the handling if someone did that. Electrical impulses sent by the instrument cluster? Is this a manual from the future, perhaps?

Anyway, back to my question - I upped preload by 2mm and it felt like it stiffened substantially with static "bounce" test. What sort of ranges have you applied to get to the point where you feel comfortable? Couple of millimetres? Ten? Just looking to get a range, so I can zero in quicker.

Also, what about the front, and - dare I say it? - tyre pressure increases?

Thanks all in anticipation, as usual.

    Cheers.

  2. Just in case anyone is interested -

I took out my (60kg+gear) colleague, having made the following changes:

    Rear preload +2mm (9mm against 7mm stock)
Front tyre 36psi (against 34 for just me)
Rear tyre 38psi (against 34 for just me)

All handled very well. Only gripe was lack of "grunt" from the power plant at low revs - something I've documented before.

    Hope that helps someone.

  3. i rode with a 85kg work mate on the back and adjusted nothing. Felt a bit squat but adjusting it for the odd passenger wouldn't be ideal for me.

Power was fine at low revs though. He quite enjoyed pulling some 2 up wheelies on the way to brands hatch.
