I've been a rider all my life but have been without a bike for a few years now. I'm 55 had 18 road bikes and find myself in a position to buy a Ducati, a bike i've wanted forever. My budget will get me a 2000 odd st2 with 30 to 50 thousand ks, a later st4 but with ks up around 70 thousand or the one i'd really like, a monster 900. My questions are will the monster be a bike i can put my girl on the back and go for a 6 or 700 k weekend ride and both of us be comfortable? I'm prepared to change seats or whatever if need be but i don't know what i'd need. Should i steer clear of an st4 with those high ks? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated guys, i'll leave it at that and hope to start some conversations. Cheers, Tom
I can't help because I know nothing about the bikes you are thinking of buying. Post in a different section of the forum.
Monster will do the job. Comfy enough bike 2up. From what my mate who's moved to Aus(Dubbo) says you wont be doing much high speed without getting nicked so fairing not really necessary. The monster and st share the same chassis as near as damnit.
Thanks guys, my budget doesn't run to a multi unfortunately but i've arranged rides on a 2000 st2 and a very tidy fresh top end 1995 900 monster on the weekend. Very excited, i'll let you know how i go! Cheers, be safe and have fun!
He wants to get there so no Multistrada's I've got a 900 Monster and I don't think the pillion seat is up to that kind of mileage.
Thanks guys, the 748 would be awesome but i'm one of these weird blokes who actually enjoys my girls company! and no, she'd struggle to ride a pushie!. Thanks for the helpful (and not!) feedback, when i've got my bike i'll whack a photo up. Brace yourselves, i have a very ordinary head, i attempt to get by on personality
and i more than enjoy mine too but it doesnt mean i compromise on the bike!! now get yourself a real ducati you know it makes sense or if you have to, that 900 monster will do
I'll be having a crack at the monster, it's the one i really want but the 748 wouldn't suit me personally regardless, i live in central victoria Australia and all my mates are at least an hour and a half ride from where i live. Shudder when you read this but i had a suzuki 1100 katana when i lived in a town a couple hours from my people and did the trip almost every weekend on the freeway (or motorway:long straight boring as batshit road) for a couple of years. A pure sports bike is but a dream for me at the moment, i can't afford two bikes so i (can't really believe i'm saying this) need to be sensible and by the right one. I loved that katana in the mountains, it was awesome (apart from somewhat wooden brakes) but on a long run it was a nightmare. Not to compare a suzuki to a Ducati but a pure sports bike? not just yet! Sue me!
I`ve ridden 7 or 8 of the aircooled monsters , owned an 1100 and currently an s2r1000. All lovely bikes and I`d happily tour solo on any of them but they are not great for long journeys two up. Not saying you can`t of course but your Mrs will be happier on the back of an ST.
Tsk - give me a chance - ive been on holiday! Right? Where do i start...ah yes, that's it...no idea....although i will say i spent quite a long ride on the back of my own hypermotard 1100 and i thought that was surprisingly comfortable...
Hi Tom. I have been riding Monsters since 2006 and they are great bikes. I used to take my ex on it and although she used to get tired after 45 minutes on it, she never said she wouldn't travel with me on it. Saying this, after my previous bike (999) I decided not to buy old motorbikes as I really did not want to deal with all the repairs or maintenance needed. Hypermotard or Multistrada are better options for travelling and your pillion will thank you for it. The new PCP offered by Ducati, allows new opportunities to people with limited budget (like me).
