748 Oil Cooler? Give me a clue :-)

  1. Hey all,

as a new Ducati owner I have a few questions about a oil cooler/ rad upgrade

When I picked up my 748 the seller handed me a brand new oil cooler "upgrade".

"Cheers" I said, "wtf does it do over the original?"
    "Better cooling" he said.
    "How" I asked
"Dunno" he said "bought it but never fitted it. Do you want it or not"
"Yeah I said, give it here"

So what was the oil cooler upgrade there to overcome? Is the original so poor?

I'm not going to track the 748 so would you advise the upgrade?
If I do it, is it complicated (new hoses or does it bolt straight on)?
If not how much can I flog it for?

    Thanks all

  2. If your bike doesnt have an oil cooler, it will increase cooling eficiency by having an oil cooler. If you have one fitted already, I have know idea (unless its a increased row corse item) best post a pic up so people can see. and look at your bike to see if an oil cooler is fitted.

    Have fun chap.

  3. AFAIK 748's don't run oil coolers.

Unless you have a heat problem (racing etc) then adding a cooler could over cool the oil, so the oil doesn't run at it's optimum temp.

  4. My 748R has an oil cooler. Not aware of any need to have an upgrade. I've tracked mine too.

  5. I believe the earlier ones did have a cooler (mine did) but only the the later SP SPS and R models had them. Perhaps the E (economy model) ditched them?

  6. As above, some early 748 models had oil coolers, but it was found that they were not needed.
The top-end SP / SPS / R models had them as these were homogolated for racing, so they needed to have the oil cooler to ensure it could be used in racing.

Road-going 748 bikes don't need them as they don't run hot enough. In fact, an oil cooler can over-cool the bike during winter months, meaning that the engine won't get up to operating temperature!

If you're going racing or mainly trackdays then it may be worth fitting one. It's very easy to do - just remove the blanking plugs in the engine and connect the oil cooler. You then need to fit the "oil diverter plate" which is a small question-mark shaped plate that goes behind the oil filter to divert oil from the filter through the cooler before it flows back into the engine. If you don't have this plate the oil won't go through the cooler so it's a waste of time fitting it!

  7. I was going to add a note about "homologated" but couldn't spell it...

    Cheers

  8. I was going to have a hissy fit and start verbally abusing members (again). But I resisted................

  9. Cheers folks. I should have mentioned this is an SPS model, T reg.
I must admit I assumed there was one as standard and I had a spare upgraded one(?).
Still haven't taken the fairing off, so I guess I'll have to wait to confirm what is actually under there.

I'm getting the feeling I won't need it though. Ta again!
