749 Hole In The Exhaust

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by tater, Jun 7, 2016.

  1. Out for a run last night and noticed my leg getting well and truly bbq'd. hole in the exhaust :( its a full race system on a 2003 bike, is it a pita to remove and will getting it welded cause me any issues?

  2. I'm guessing it's a Termignoni end can were talking about, as they do seem to be a little fragile.
Shouldn't be too difficult to remove and get sorted by your favourite welder :)

  3. I had this on my 57mm system. It was in the pipe from the vertical cylinder. I removed it and got it welded for a tenner.
    No problems since then.

  4. Depends if its the back box and whether its Titanium or not, if not and its one of the pipes then its pretty straightforward, if it is then its a bit more tricky, you need the proper titanium rods and an expert to do it.

Mine is a Titanium item and I had to have it replaced earlier this year due to it being welded so many times it looked like a pepper pot. They are notoriously fragile....good luck.

  5. Cheers guys, will locate the hole and get it welded, sounds like it might be the start of a regular thing :(

  6. Update, it looks like its not a hole after all! The spring holding the two sections together appears to have sprung off, couple of pics attached. is it as simple as replacing the spring or will i need a new gasket between the two sections? i also discovered just how quickly the exhaust heats up last night :( ouch!

  7. There are no gaskets apart from at the bolted joint to the cylinder head.
I am surprised that losing a spring has meant that there is a leak - I would check that everything is correctly aligned and then replace the spring.

  8. There ARE gaskets at every join on my exhaust.

  9. The leak is definitely coming through that join, so i'm hoping sticking a newspring in there will pull it all together again. As its not come totally apart i'm hoping i dont need to strip it down and replace the gaskets.

Cheers for the info peeps, appreciated as always.

  10. According to my 999(03) parts diagram you have a gasket between the cylinder and the exhaust and the exhaust and the end can but no gasket where the front and main parts of the exhausts meet, that's just the spring holding it in place.

  11. They've been retro fitted then mate. Which isn't a bad idea. All the exhausts I've ever had apart don't have them because Ducati use a reasonable double seal system with an inner tube and they pretty much self seal.

If it makes the OP more comfortable then maybe a little high temp sealant is okay but the pipe is a long way off closed up there so would check alignment of the frame mount

  12. Ive used gungum before on car exhausts with good results, not sure about using it on italian exotica tho!

I would double check the alignment if replacing the spring don't work,as said above they are usually a good self sealing fit.

  13. Hi there. Do you know somebody who welds titanium? I have a hole in my Termignoni of the 999.

  14. I'm in Exeter.
How do you know the can is titanium?

  15. It's a Termignoni. My mechanic cannot weld it because he said it's titanium.

  16. Lost count of the amount of times I had my Termi welded on my 999, also lost a spring hoop on one of the link pipes once.

  17. Where (or with whom) to you weld it? I'm struggling to find somebody who can do the job for me.

  18. A mate did mine, mine was not Titanium though. Surely there must be a decent welder in London town

  19. Still not sure how we know for certain that it's titanium...
