Hey guys... Long time lurker/reader here, finally got myself a Ducati! It's a 2014 899. I'm hoping to get some opinions on security options. It's got nothing beyond the standard immobiliser as of now. I'm gonna chain it up to a ground anchor in the garage overnight/ whenever it's at home. The bit in not sure about is if I should spend £300 on a thatcham cat 1 alarm system (£110 for the alarm of £290 installed) or just get a really top end alarmed disc lock. I'm paranoid cause my last bike a K5 gsxr got stolen from outside my house despite having a thatcham alarm on it - it wasn't locked up though, just parked on the road overnight. Any input is appreciated.
BikeTrac has its knockers but it would be the only thing I would consider. Chains are good at slowing the scum down a little bit but that's all really. Personally I wouldn't bother with another type of alarm, look at bike Trac as it has some route tracking and bike down stuff that helps it be more than just protection. I read an article by a bike thief, a few things to note... - alarmed disc locks are actually pretty annoying for a crim, difficult to get at and really noisy. - often people who had bikes stolen would replace them quickly under insurance. This is risky as your house is 'marked' as being someone who has one. He said often he would go back and nick the same bike a few weeks later! Best of luck Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Alarms - waste of time and money and often cause trouble. The only person who will give a F@@k if your alarm goes off is you, if you are close-enough to hear it. Fit a tracker, and use the biggest heaviest chain, lock and ground-anchor you can manage. Don't leave it outside overnight.
Already ordered one only to find that the anchor isn't big enough... Will be getting a bigger anchor now. The alarm is more for when I'm out and about really.
Give that geordie fella a call at almax, honestly never met a more helpful chap when it comes to securing your bike. He’s got all sorts of tips if you’re that way inclined (he tried to get me to trip wire mine with a fishing line and a rape alarm lol). Knows every bike and the size of chain etc you’ll need too. Cant recommend him enough.
Yeah I spoke to him about the anchor and chain setup. I'm just waiting to double check the anchor dimensions before I change my order to the smaller chain or get a bigger anchor.
The Ducati alarm I had on my 1098 filled up with water when I left the bike parked outside during a thunderstorm in the Alps. It was troublesome for the next two days, culminating in the embarrassment of the alarm going off in the middle of Milan just as I was riding past some Carrabinieri. Needless to say it was ripped out that evening and consigned to a wheelie-bin.
Bike Trac & Sold Secure Gold (Xena X1) disc lock. There was a thread on here a while ago for a guy selling pins that go through the rear hub and then get chained to the ground. I emailed and got some details but decided I didn't need it in the end. I'm sure someone will know the guy if you're interested.
Found an email - pragmasis.com. Supposed to be very good but you have to ensure the chain is off the ground.
Yeah I've looked at them and decided to go with the almax option cause of price and simplicity. I've already got a normal disc lock and an abus granit alarmed one. Probably gonna chain both wheels to spectate anchors, double disc locks, one alarmed, and a locked garage. If they still steal it they deserve the bloody thing and I will switch to a Segway or something.
Put a 120 dB Klaxon horn in the garage. Then if they steal the bike at least you will know that they can no longer hear...
That's my preferred option: front and rear anchors. Pragmasis 16mm chain, lock and Torc anchor at the front, Pragmasis Anti-Pinch Pin, 16mm chain, lock and Torc anchor at the rear (of all the bikes), Locked and monitored alarmed garage, with an sounder in the garage, Garage doors immobilised, CCTV cameras inside and out. The Panigale has a Biketrac fitted too. There are still ways the scum could get the bikes...but I've done about as much as I can.
I've got a locked garage with a bolt on the gate so it can't be opened from the outside unless you cut the metal gate. Two locks on the door leading to the garden. Torc anchor with 19mm almax chain. Alarmed abus granit disc lock. The garage isn't alarmed, it's got a dummy alarm box (the house is alarmed) and the most fake looking fake cctv camera ever. With the bike trac, does it go somewhere hidden so that a theif can't just take the seat off and remove it?
Yeah, it's well hidden. I'm guessing part of having it installed is finding somewhere to put it that's not obvious or easy to get to.
