1098 Noob questions

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Carsick Steve, Nov 13, 2012.

  1. Hi All,

Going back to look at a possible deal with my Monster on an 1098s tomorrow, just wondering if there is anything I should be wary of/look out for?

Had a quick look over it today and cosmetically all looks 'OK', a few marks on it which go against the grain of my OCD but should be easy enough to get it looking like new again. One thing which would eternally bother me is a scratched dash screen - can just the perspex bit be replaced (told you I was fussy!)?

A few other Q's if you don't mind:

    1. I have looked into recalls by searching on here (regulator, rear sprocket, radiator and poss' dash misting) is there a way of telling if they have been done if there is nothing present in the documentation, both visual checks and/or VIN search?
    2. The front mudguard/fender is just black plastic, I assumed this would be carbon on the 's'? Not really a problem as I can nip up the road to carbon king...

I shall check and cross reference the V5 and go through all of the other doc's with a fine toothed comb to verify its pedigree and history, it's just been for sale for a while (noticed the tax ran out on 02/12) and just wondered why.....seems relatively cheap...?

Apologies if all of the above has been covered, but I'm back there tomorrow morning so have limited time to do my research.

The bike in question: DUCATI 1098 1098 cc 1098S

    Thanks in advance..

    Steve

  2. Does seem cheap.you can usually check if recalls done if u know who the dealer is that's done servicing .can't help re the dash.could try pushing them to do it.but seems friends a good deal.

  3. Ment to say, should have carbon front mudguard as standard .may be a perfectly good explanation.is it hpi 'd.

  4. Did it have a CF mudguard as standard? Thought they were plastic?
I know a little about the dealer, he does price competitively, they were a puka franchised DUC dealer when in Reading, I believe they still have the same mechanic...If any of that helps..

  5. I believe the S did have a CF mudguard.....but could be wrong....I was once before!

  6. All good stuff, many thanks guys.

Good to know a bit about the dealer, seemed like a good guy, nice to hear that the mechanic potentially knows his stuff as they did the last (belts) service, which I was perhaps wrongly a bit put off by it not having a Ducati service stamp..!?

The guy just wants shot of it as he said he is overrun with stock, which when I turned up was absolutely true, nearly all litre sports bikes too - tough times for them I guess so potential bargains for us punters.

I am going to do a HPI check in a bit.

My only real worry is that it has had a clock change and the mileage is therefore out, just appeared to me to be a little bit tatty for a 3000 mile machine, but did I mention that I'm a fussy bastard:biggrin: Things which boil my urine, like scratched fork adjusters where some ham fisted grease monkey has used a 'fit all' spanner of some kind, damaged by keys key surround - keep your house keys separate FFS:mad::smile:, boot scratches on tail unit etc etc. All easily rectified and reflected in the price I guess. Basically a nice little winter fettling project...hopefully.

    Thanks again :upyeah:

  7. Dash and headlight misting is something that is really not a problem, mine was never dealt with and only rears it's head when the weather is cold.
One thing you should defo have a good look at is the fork seals. With 3000 on the clock it would have probably already had a new set, so check the service history for new seals.
The Ohlin forks seals go regularly and will cost about £130 for a dealer to replace. A rear hugger would be a good addition, helps keep all the road crap of off those Termi's.
And yes, the 1098s came with a CF front mudguard as standard.

  8. I went to look at that bike last week, had put a deposit on it over the phone as im 150 miles from the dealer, asked plenty of questions on the phone, was told the bike was unmarked and perfect, but it was far from it, does not look like a 3000 mile bike, loads of chips in the frame/subframe paint , brake fluid had melted the air tube, dodgy paint around the mirrors on the upper fairing, missing the carbon mudguard etc
Made me walk away, cheap enough, but id rather pay a little bit more

  9. Not sure about 1098S , but my 1098S tricolore had a carbon fibre front mudguard fitted as standard . . .

  10. Ive got brochures from 2007/8 and they show a carbon mudguard, whilst i was walking away the mechanic asked if they fitted the mudguard, would it secure a deal, he'd already rung and got a price for it

  11. My bad...

  12. To be honest I agree with all of the above mate, I was quite disappointed really. I've had my Monster from new and been meticulous with keeping it nice, and would be a bit of a pull to swap it out for something less than perfect, which it should be at 3k miles IMHO. Didn't have much time to have a good look at it, and it was crammed in between some Jap stuff.

Shall go back tomorrow with an open mind.....

Also I've literally 5 mins ago had another p/x offer via ebay to take a look at....1098s, privately owned, 1 owner, 380 miles but still had two belt changes, sounds more my cuppa..fingers crossed.

  13. There are plenty of good 1098s around, dont take second best

  14. If in doubt don't... Load a deals coming now as winter descends.
The one at Pegasus sounds like a deal, but needs a bit of a tidy, it the price is right and you're happy to do the work....all good in the hood...:upyeah:

  15. Hello all. I have just bought a 3000 mile 1098s from motorcycle traders near reading, was this the one you are talking about? It has no termis but has a cf front mudguard.

  16. pm'ed mate.

I noticed they had tarted her up a bit! Was going to pop in and have a look myself now I've sold the Monster - won't bother now :).

    Health to enjoy buddy!

  17. My 1098s came as standard with the carbon fiber front mudguard fitted as did all 1098s I believe.
