749 Clutch

  1. I'm looking for advise on how to making the clutch lever operation lighter. Done the quite clutch mod a few years ago which helped a lot but can't help but think it could be lighter still. I read that some owners remove two of the six pressure plate springs and some fit Oberon slaves. Has anyone done either of these mods or is there anything else that can be done. Many thanks in advance.

  2. I have the 29mm Oberon slave and the clutch is easy to operate. And I have the arms and hands of a 12-year old Chinese girl.

  3. The Oberon aftermarket slave cylinder has a different size piston to the OE which makes the pull at the handlebar lever feel a lot lighter. I'd try that first to see how it feels before removing springs from the clutch. Andy

  4. If you have no clutch drag issues, then the Oberon is a good way forward. However, do bear in mind that the lighter action is achieved at the expense of range of movement at the clutch plates end, so you get less movement of the pushrod relative to movement of the lever.

While trying to stop my clutch dragging last year, I happened on another way of making the clutch lighter. This is to remove some of the plain plates where they are doubled up. I am now running a much reduced stack height and the result is a much lighter lever due to the reduced preload on the clutch springs.
In theory, there is a risk of clutch slip but I'm getting neither drag nor slip and I have a lovely light, smooth lever action.

Well worth a try - costs nothing and is easily reversed if you should get any problems. If you do try it, please let us know how you get on.

  5. Well, @Mongoose ??? Did you try the Oberon??

  6. I'll go with all of the above, the Oberon clutch slave is in my opinion one of the best mods I've done to my bike, i could hardly believe the difference ...clutch pull is light as a feather.

  7. Another thumbs up for the Oberon. I fitted one over the summer the difference is amazing even with my ham sized fists.

  8. No not yet @Old rider . Was just after some feedback at the moment but they do sound very promising as I've yet to hear a bad comment about them. The hardest thing i think is to choose the right colour !! Maybe it'll be one of those winter jobs that I get round to doing.
Thanks to all for the feedback.
