Anyone Not Ride On The Road Anymore?

  1. Okay so I'm seriously considering throwing the towel in on my road riding.

The risk (mainly to my licence) is obsurd and I get very little pleasure from wobbling around like miss daisy.

Considering just tracking my bike from now on?

Anyone in the same boat ?

  2. nope,, not me..

  3. Since I started working towards my advance motorcycle test after 49 years of riding, I'm actually enjoying my road riding more. Not quite sure what you mean by wobbling around but the roads on some of the rideouts you most definitely won't lose your licence but you need to be a bloody good rider to make progress. Probably done over 2500 miles in the last couple of months just on observed and social runs and having a great time. Andy

  4. Interesting input mate, funnily enough I am IaM and to be honest found the whole thing a bit laughable. That's a different story though.

For me, I only like sport bikes. And unless you open them up they just don't seem to make sense.

I'm struggling to see how I can open it up on the road really.

  5. As you know my day bike is my Multistrada but I also have my 1098R which gets the cobwebs blown out of it on high days and holidays. I also have the 853 for the track and I have to say despite at least 2 multi day trips to Spain and maybe 6 single days in the UK a year, I'd go round the bend if I stopped my everyday riding. Difficult call which I don't envy you. Perhaps it's my age but I get a buzz from everything I ride. Andy

  7. See I only ride once a week tops in the summer, on a Sunday with my father in law....

  8. Fair enough but I do have a few words of caution for you, track days are as addictive as any class A drug and you may well end up riding more than you do on the road. Good luck and I hope you enjoy. Andy

  9. Ha ha, I well and truly have the bug mate!

  11. I have tried and failed. Road first, track second. Although I am going thru a phase (I am certain driven by lack of others to ride with) of not riding at all.

  12. I have my moments where it concerns me BUT I think it's worth keeping things in perspective. Personally I doubt u have 2 inch chicken strips!

Seen your other thread though and if your head is in track riding it's probably best to get into that as for me they are both different disciplines but each have there plus points.

My 899 felt easily manageable on track and almost at times needing more bottom end, on the road though it feels really quick so I get more out of it.

  14. Do they equate to points on your licence over the pond ?

  16. I bought an 848 when I passed my test in 2007/8. After a year I started racing (Desmodue), and during the 2 years I was racing I didn't ride on the road at all because it wasn't as much fun as racing. So when I stopped racing 5 years ago I sold everything and didn't ride at all. Earlier this year I bought a 959 just for track, and partly because I bumped into a few local, keen (yet sensible) road riders, and also partly because I have slowed over 5 years off the bike, I actually enjoyed the road riding again. If you have the right friends and right roads and right approach, the road can be fun... but I still did 4 trackdays to explore my riding in a safer environment. Road riding is as much a social event as anything.

  17. yep,, i love road riding ( when it is dry and warm ) ,, years , many , ago i rode many many miles, i admit it i was lucky to still be here, had afew moments and a few serious offs, never hurt myself :grinning: but what little sense i had told me to slow down or stop,, i could not slow down ( boring ) so stopped almost altogether, just the odd run on folks bikes and some off road,,then many years later i still had two friends who were fast in their day and still road bikes and they said ( dont know why ) that if they could stay alive then so can i , so i got my Ducati,, really enjoy it and still alive,, tho i am a lot more carefull now,, old addage,, better to arrive safe than not at all, and i am still arriving .. ( well not until nxt yr now ):grinning:

  18. My issues aren't just from a safety aspect though really

For me, as much as I like riding out on a Sunday to get breakfast with the guys. I'm just not excited by road riding anymore, and in my head am finding it difficult to justify the overheads and the risk for one ride a week in the summer...

When I could just buy a track bike and feed my want for speed, or even better - go racing ?

  19. Yes, me.

I sold my last road bike in early 2014 because I needed the cash at the time, not because I was worried about my licence.

As the months went by I lost the yearning for road riding and then started a new contract abroad, so pointless having a road bike sitting in the garage in the UK.

I then bought a track 996SPS from my brother in law and trailered it down here to Hungary where I joined in with second half of the Superbike championship (open 1000 class) this year.

    Now I'm hooked on racing.

  20. I love my track days but I also like the social side of road riding I could not give up road riding get all together, seeing my mates go out on a Sunday morning without me would really piss me off!! do loads of track days mate and buy a cheap 748 for road riding cheep to run, good fun on the roads not mental quick just enough for the Sunday blast.
