Nice Trick 996 Or 998 Wanted

Discussion in 'Wanted' started by Wsb27, Dec 24, 2016.

  1. Will be getting used on track so any engine, exhaust, suspension and wheel mods preferred, will also get used on road but not much. Not in a rush to buy but money is in bank if the right bike comes along. So if you have 1 or know someone who has let me know please. Thanks

  2. after lots of humming and arrrring I've decided I want a 996 or 998. The R's are out of my price range so it's looking like a S model. It won't be used much on the road but will on track,is there much difference between the 2 ?

  3. Fastest colour was always Red.....make sure it's Red.

...don't listen to Elsie....he's colour blind and bought the wrong colour.

  5. If a 998 it should be yellow, looks far better - THEY ARE FASTER TOO!
:Writing: Don't listen to AC as he was after buying mine when he realised the above :smileys:

  6. Fancy a 996sps??

  7. What's your budget? I know a mega trick (155kg wet) one with a blown 1198 motor that may be for sale at the right price. Dripping in magnesium and trick proper race stuff, not off the shelf bolt on bling. May even have won Ducati of the year last year ;)

  12. Sounds good.

  13. If you buy a 998(S) euro spec you should from what I've read be buying something pretty close to a 996(R).
No carbon air box or Ohlins forks or limited run, but close enough make it good value.

I am pleased with my 9989S (tuned) it feels as quick as my 1000rr mid range.. but not fast by todays standards.
I doubt it would enjoy being thrashed round a track on the same budget.

The 996(R) engine uses the newer engine (Testastretta) as used in the 998 and the 999. That differs from the 748,916,996 range. non (R) 996 does not use this engine... Some I think prefer the power delivery on the earlier bikes? I have not tried one.

The 998(S) had a deeper sump, different cams and I think as stock, a 996R ecu? perhaps a different exhaust?

    A bit beyond my knowledge:
998s vs 996r There has been some debate, if rods are the same and if the crankcases are sand cast, some say they are some don't... I've been told on cross over years some models may have had parts used from old stock so there maybe a few different ones? I don't know, there are talks of proto types and pre-producation bikes on this forum.

I believe some 998(S) had different calipers to some base models, maybe called P4's?..
I think they are easy to spot as they use different pads to the base model.

The 998(S) I believe has a Ohlins rear shock and Ohlins steering damper as standard.

According to both Ducati and on line parts manuals the 998(S) 2002 EU spec only has the same part no front discs, as the 996R and 998FE. Which differ from the 998 Bostrom, 988 Mastrix and base model, US versions and 998R

I have the manuals that compare the part no's as per Ducati OEM stock and have made some calls re my own bike.

It is explain well here.. Ducati 998 - Wikipedia

Despite the fact the 998 did not win the world superbike championship, it only lost via the last race by one place I think? . "showdown at Imola" It won the constructors championship and Macua GP and would seem it was the power plant in the 996R... Ducati refer to some crossover between the two race bikes.

Personally if you are not bothered about all that, I'd go for 996 with the 1198 motor, with different forks with mono block calipers. In fact I'd just go for a 1198 or 1299... but they are beautiful bikes.

I think that is correct, Exige put me on to this type of bike and I am so glad I bought it, as I was looking anything any model 916 to 996 before I knew some of the specs..

Someone may correct some of my points, it's quite new to me and my bike is not stock...
