  1. Are your bose the in ear ones?

  2. no, on ear. A find has in ear and you can't hear any music whatsoever even sat next to him, and he can't hear anything else even at quite low volume

  3. Bose in ear QuietComfort for me (wear on bike) had them years still 100% just don't forget they need to be charged - you can normally get a discount at their Portsmouth outlet if you ask on any of their products ... plus you can try them out :)

  4. Thank you for that information Char. Will hand it on to Mrs Mervyn.

  5. I do recall you singing their virtues in a previous ear plugs thread. Still impressed by them then?

  6. I've a pair of Bose QC35 (the latest on-ear, rechargeable ones) and the QC20 in ear headphones. I bought the QC20's as a last resort as I left the QC35's at home and couldn't face a flight without them.

In short, to me, the QC20's have better noise cancelling and sound better. They are far less bulky and even when the on board rechargeable battery fails, being wired, they will still play music albeit with no cancelling and a drop off in quality. The in-ears are v comfortable with 3 bud sizes. The on ears are a bit messy with the hair and sweaty. All important to lady Mervyn, I'd guess. The on ears also look silly.

The on ears are bulky and stop when the power stops. The in ears come with a discrete carry case. Fit in Lady Mervyn's Bag.

The on ears are more practical at home yet I still find myself using the in-ear option.

Others have mentioned Bose quality v's B&O & Bowers for on ear quality. I'd agree.

  7. Thankyou 1976 dc for your information.Mrs Mervyn will be looking and trying the various options you have mentioned.First port of call is for Bose, they are quite local to us.

  8. Thankyou RSVRRollo for another option to consder.Always nice to hear personal experiences as opposed to advertising hype.

  9. My eldest went through an exercise of looking for decent quality, decent value noise cancelling headphones.

He already had a set of B&W headphones (without noise cancelling) and the sound is excellent from them, along with great build quality and looks.

He looked at B&O and B&W, but they were just too expensive for him.

he finally ended up trying the Bose and Sony, and found the Sony gave better music/sound/build quality, with the Bose giving slightly better noise cancelling both at similar price points. he went with the Sony headphones. He finds the noise cancelling more than adequate, to the point where he can put them on with no music and turn the noise cancelling on to shut noise out while he studies - he's missed many a brew through not hearing me shout to him that there's a brew on.

I'm sure whatever you go with, Mrs Merv will find the noise cancelling a step change in listening experience.

    Pete

  10. Thankyou Pete for your information.Mrs Mervyn will do a fair bit of testing before she makes the choice.
She will deliberate a fair bit-she doesn't do impulse buying, not like me.

  11. Why does she need them Mervyn-are you getting too enthusiastic with the stable in the garage? Bit of late night revving going on? !

  12. I think it's my habit of singing or humming-just the first line of a song usually.Over and over again. She particularly hates me when I pretend to be a trumpet and start the French national anthem.
She loves hearing my motorbikes and the little smile it puts on my face.:)

  14. Thankyou Mac.

  15. Depends what you want them for.

First question would be in ear, on ear, over ear? Only the end user can decide that. I only use over ear as that's my preference one style is no better than another.

Bose QC35 are the industry standard as far as active noise cancelling are concerned but the sound lacks base and is a little hollow with sounds not overlapping so well but it's a more natural sound. The new Sony MDR1000x are winning all the awards currently. ANC as good as the Bose with a more theatrical sound - heavy base and layered. Set analagy I can give is the Bose is closer to a natural sound like hearing music live, the Sony's like going to Cinema with all the surround sound (hope that makes sense). The Sony's have modern touch n swipe controls and a more stable Bluetooth connection but the wired connection has a drop in quality. That's said the Sony has a 3.5mm jack where the Bose is a 2.5 to 3.5 so will be harder to find replacement leads if needed. Both are rechargeable with a battery life of 20 hrs.
The Sony's are slightly heavier and I found a little restrictive in the way they sat on my ears, I found the Bose comfortable.
My advice is to head to somewhere like John Lewis that stocks them both - and others and try them.

For what it's worth I bought the QC35's. Are they the best? No, there is no such thing as the best but they suited my needs more then any others.

Google has all the industry reviews and "awards" and I'd say if you over ear it's between those 2.

  19. Another vote for Bose QC35.

I've looked at various pairs of Bose over the last few years. Whilst in the Apple shop on holiday last year, I tried a pair of the QC35 and was blown away with the noise cancelling and sound quality. I was stood in a busy Apple shop, and it all went silent with the head phones on. My girlfriend saw the smile on my face, and bought me a pair for my birthday as a surprise.

Used them on flights and trains and love them.

As said before, may not be the best, but way more than good enough for my needs.
