just seen on the news that smokers cost the nhs 2 billion per year. Anyone got an idea on the tax gathered from the sale of tobacco?
only info I came up with in my 30 second google was this. Tax Revenue from Tobacco » Tobacco Manufacturers' Association
same figures. 10 thousand million more collected in taxes than spent on smoking related illness.. ? Fuck off...
whilst the amount if smokers has decreased year on year ( costing the nhs less) the amount of tax has gone up year on year. Yes I smoke and yes I wish I didnt, mainly because of what it costs! But don't be making me feel bad ( not you el t, the media/gov)when if it weren't for us die hard your have to cone up with ya 10 billion else where . fat people.. More people die from being fat. Tax fuck outta em.. ( unless like me, ya fat and smoke coz I pay enough tax on me cigs)
Absolutely, smokers perform a civic duty, they pay loads of tax during their lifetime then they die young so as not to be a burden on the NHS in their old age. Still a filthy habit though.
You could put in a freedom of information act request ( FOI ) to get those facts however they will only give you UK paid information and not the overall picture including best guess legal import figures.
Don't worry Stu, you don't contribute any tax to the treasury coffers. You would if you ever bought any cigarettes
Could you get finm to explain in brackets everything he says too (tell finm to do the explaining in brackets thing)
Another important factor to consider is that of pensions - if smokers on average don't live as long as non-smokers, then they don't draw as much state pension. In the UK, if we just look at the matter of advertising into account, it's remarkable that hard liquor can be advertised even on TV, and marketed with glamorous packaging and tiny health warnings, yet cigarettes are already hidden behind blinds, and soon to have plain packaging I think. How has smoking been turned into "the great satan" over, what, the past 40 years, while alcohol has become more acceptable?
