Belt Fit Cock-up

  1. Hello chaps/chapettes
1991 750 Supersport belt change, lined up the marks on rear, crank and front pulleys, slackened the front tensioner, took off the belt. Slackened the rear tensioner, took off the belt, and the pulley spun out of position under spring load as expected. What I wasn't ready for was how fast it went, and so I don't know if it went clockwise or anticlockwise.
In my mind, I suspect it won't make a difference which I turn it so long as I end up with the marks aligned, but I've been wrong before and this could be an expensive cock-up, so advice please. Is it possible to mis-time the cylinder if I go the wrong direction, or is it as simple as line the dots regardless?
    Cheers

  2. The direction won't matter. At the timing position the vertical piston is half way down the inlet stroke so there is no problem rotating the cam in any direction. I find a pair of long nosed pliers inserted into the holes in the vertical cyl cam pulley useful for holding it with the marks lined up while fitting the belt.
