Ok so I know that NGK plugs require a thin walled socket, Champion plugs are fine with a normal plug socket and avoid irridium plugs unless you want running issues but which ones are the correct spec? The manual says: (749/749 DARK) Champion RG4HC Champion 8654 NGK CR9EVX And then... Champion RG59V Champion 8654 NGK CR9EVX Obviously all would work but which champion plugs as the above is a bit confusing. Oh and ive looked on one of my service bills and I have CR9EB plugs in which is what some ebayers are quoting but most dont have any product code. :Rage:
I have given up on Champion plugs.........I have three pairs of new ones here and neither of them gives a spark as big and fat as well used NGK ones....... I would check out the NGK website for which fitment is best for your bike..........
I just typed the list into ebay and there is a big price jump in the different Champion plugs. The CR9EVX is the irridium plug and I dont want those.....
Cheers Al. Just found it from a catalogue. The part finder didnt work but the catalogue was worth the look just for the nice lady in the black one-piece
The next issue is electrode gap. Manual states 0.6-4mm I hope the torque settings are more accurate. How tight? Between 3nm and 180....
Since I had my Guzzi in the 80s, I won't fit any other than NGK.......I had that bike for several years and only changed the plugs three times........ ........I don't think I have ever had a faulty NGK other than when I left them in too long and they had got a bit worn...... .......but out of the six new Champions I have here, none give what I would call a spark any better than a lawnmower needs, and three of them have a loose top electrode..........they fall out of the ceramic insulator..... P*ss poor quality, fit only for the bin..........
DCPR9E is for the 748/996 etc. I use the stock champions tbh as they give a lot less problems with the plug socket than NGK. I run all gaps at 0.9mm I've also tried the MAR twin electrode plug form the 1098 in them and that seems to work pretty well. They have a little less electrode protrusion than the stock plug and work with the high domed piston in the '04 S so as not having to use the surface discharge types.
I'd run at .9 tbh. There's been some decent articles over the years on the subject and that's always been a number that comes up. I've not had any issues using it
I just checked the NGK partfinder site again (thinking I had told you incorrectly) and the 749s and Dark are definitely supposed to have the CR9EB plugs. NGK Partfinder Catalogues
YEAH I PICKED A PAIR OF THOSE UP FROM EBAY FOR UNDER A TENNER. OEM GAP WAS .7 WHICH MATCHED WHAT CAME OUT BUT WILL REGAP THEM AFTER WORK TODAY ALONG WITH A FEW LITTLE ISSUES IM SORTING. (MISFIRE). MY LAST INVOICE SHOWS NGK PLUGS FITTED BUT DENSO ONES WERE FITTED. HMM.
Hey did you sort the misfire and what was the cause, I'm currently misfiring and losing a shed load of power suspect plugs but I'm getting abit worried, no codes on the dash though so hopefully nothing serious
