749 Which Spark Plugs?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by JC749, May 12, 2014.

  1. According to Stein Dinse website a new coil is €145.91, about £130. I think I'd rather lift the tank :p

  2. Me too...

  3. About £50 used on eBay when they come up.

  4. That's getting closer to not lifting the tank...
Put out a request on here to see if anybody has one spare they'd sell ??

  5. Lazy bugger, is only 6 bolts!

  6. :)

  7. So update time, I changed both plugs and swapped the coils however iv notice the cylinder exhaust is getting hot at the start then, further down its glowing red, like really red, I think there's a cat in there under a heat shield??? And after that it's a lot cooler and obviously still miss firing any ideas guys

  8. I'm in Dumfries and Galloway derek so a hell of a long way away, is it ok if I give you a ring pal to get abit of an insight into this 749

  9. I went through a coil failure last summer but the failure initiated a fault code and shut down the fuel injector on the affected cylinder, bike would still do 70 easily enough. The coil also failed on resistance measurement spec. http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/eobd-10-1-engine-running-on-one-cylinder.43961/
Slightly confused by the cold pipe, you need to check at the manifolds, they get hot enough to burn your skin in an instant, a cold pipe is just that. Yes there is a cat under the heat shield on the front cylinder pipe.

OR, I have heard a number of adverse reports on Iridium plugs and there are at least two of the best service establishments in England that will not use them.

  10. The cat is getting very hot because it is burning the unburnt fuel caused by the misfire. Which shows that the injectors are working so it is an ignition problem.
When you swapped the coil did the cold pipe swap over too?
Does changing the plugs mean you fitted new ones or did you swap them too, or did you fit a pair of old ones?

  11. I put new plugs in, once I changed the coils over the issue stayed with the original cylinder. So it's not plugs or coils. So now I'm beginning to think it could be more serious than I thought

  12. OK, not plugs nor coils. That only leaves a wiring fault (intermittent poor connection) which is unlikely but not impossible, a faulty ECU (they usually fail completely on one cylinder), or a mechanical problem (valve clearances out of adjustment).
Does the bike consistently run on only one cylinder or does the other one chime in on and off?

  13. Could the t
it chimes in on and off, but on tick over there is constantly misfires. Bit when riding it the problem sometimes clears up but then always comes back if that makes sense

  14. Ok thanks for the heads up. If I get a problem I'll just swap back. So far so good though.

  15. Really hard to diagnose this without getting a hands on the bike but you say the misfires is always the horizontal cylinder despite new plugs and swapping the coils and it sometimes clears but comes back again.
The best I can come up with is a poor connection to the horizontal coil.
Check that the cable to coil isn't pinched or squeezed anywhere. Sometimes they can break internally where they are tie-wrapped tightly to something. We had a hell of a job chasing a misfire on my son's 916 Strada last year. It started ok cold but misfired badly once it was hot. It turned out to be break in one of the coil wires inside the loom where it had been pinched.
A long shot as I don't see why it would affect only one cylinder, but try a new fuel pump relay (it also supplies the power to the coils).
Also check that the ECU earth is sound. It is earthed by a flying lead with a ring connector attached to one of the securing bolts at the bottom of the ECU.

  16. Ok will have a look, it's the fact that the exhaust is hot off the cylinder then the cat glows red hot and takes forever to heat up after the cat which is confusing me. I'm thinking I should just bite the bullet and book it in as it's beyond my ability I think

  17. Yes, when you have reached the limit of your abilities that is probably the best option.

  18. Seen on here a few people throw a lot of money at things like this trying to get to the bottom of a weird fault. If it were me i'd throw it in the back of a van and get it to @Derek ( i assume you are open for business?) rather than the local guy. Duc's are a special breed.
