Clutch Slave 'sqeaking'?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by redsail, Apr 7, 2017.

  1. Noticed it squeak quite loudly yesterday when cold, it's a whistley-squeak, just like one of those toy squeakers when they fail. I'm going to remove the slave cylinder and take a look, clean, do fluids etc, today but wondered if anyone else had this symptom and what if anything solved it? I know the ducati slaves are prone to fault (I had my first one replaced under warranty) and aftermarket replacements exist but wanted to check with the experts first in case an easy solution existed and what to look for when I remove it. I like the feel and action of the stock slave so don't really want to change it.

    Bike is 2013 848 SE

  2. I wouldn't think it was anything to do with your slave cylinder and as your bike has a wet clutch it is very unlikely to have come from there either. So unfortunately I can't offer any useful advice

  3. The sound is definitely coming from the clutch slave cylinder when I actuate the clutch lever.

  4. never owned a wet clutch 848 but if it still has a clutch pushrod being actuated from the other side of the engine then there's a chance it's a suspect here.

  5. Yes it's got a long pushrod. Is it's safe to pull this out to inspect/clean it?

  6. yes, of course, it's a straight forward procedure unless something has become damaged in which case you would need to investigate anyway. I can't think that the pushrod side would be different to a dry clutch version apart from the obvious addition of oil circulating in more areas possibly. It is possible for the pushrod to bind on the small roller bearing approx half way along length of pushrod this is usually due to the roller bearing becoming worn/damaged which can result in the whole bearing assy (so cage/outer body also) revolving with the pushrod but is unusual if low mileage/inspected regularly. It's a perfect time to check your pressure plate bearing is not dragging or worn also.

  7. Thanks Chris. Just had a look and there's fluid leaking into the slave but the noise had diminished. Pulled the rod out a bit and one of the two orings that keep the oil in has broken. Need to replace that, I hope these are standard bits I can pick up somewhere and if it's ok to ride as is until I get one...

I'll look into inspecting the pushrod bearing as there's others noise/vibe I've noticed when riding.

  8. yes, it's ok to ride without the O-rings temporarily, they are often missing or broken when inspecting a new bike.

  9. Any idea what size I'd need to get... assuming they're not some specific Ducati part

  10. although a small part it's just as easy to contact a Ducati specialist as they will often pop them in an envelope and post to you. I look upon this as a big favour for such a small part though so don't make a habit of it myself.

  11. Nipped into REPS as they're near me and picked 2 up. No charge

  12. Get an o-ring kit from Toolstation, it has the loads of them in the correct size in there and they work fine.

You'll also have loads of other standard sized too and it only costs a couple of quid :)

  13. Mine squeeked it was the bearing in the clutch pressure plate, it did sound like it came from the clutch slave but the bearing was so stuck it ended up not spinning at all & boiling the clutch fluid

  14. Thanks that's useful info. How difficult is the fix?

  15. As your bike doesn't have a dry clutch, it is a wet clutch running in oil I would be surprised if the pressure plate bearing was squeaking, having said that anything is possible.

  16. At the risk of confusing matters, there is a secondary 'squeak' issue which I thought might have been an engine bearing but REPS have had both sides of the cases off to inspect the easily accessible bearings, and check the crevices where debris collects, result: no issues.

This other squeaking/rubbing is more felt than heard when on the bike and happens sometimes when engaging/disengaging the clutch, especially when the engine is not being driven and you're off the throttle for longish intervals. Its sort of intermittent so hard to pin down precisely what conditions cause it. It definitely doesn't happen when on the gas though.

  17. Is this with a wet clutch?

    Commonplace with a dry clutch.
Some strange folk use grease to prevent it.

  18. Yes, that's the strange thing. Yesterday it was really bad, but I was out with some new riders and was riding quite slow compared to normally (lots of dawdling, plus it was a warm day). Bike was getting very hot. Usually the bike stays at a decent temp.

I just found a post about a 749 (dry clutch) with what sounds exactly like my issue, plus I've found what look like bearing cage pieces on the oil filter gauze in the past:

"I logged about 250 miles yesterday on my 749 and about 1/2 way home I started hearing what sounded like a whirring noise with a hint of whistle to it. I got off the bike, and could easily tell it was coming from the clutch side. Sounds like the throw out bearing making a bit of noise. Anyways, when I got home and let it cool off, the noise was gone. Seems to be louder when warm. The whirring noise sounds like a bearing spinning, but I can tell its external, and not internal. Only thing I can think of is the throw out bearing in the clutch."
